WIP 71st Highlanders Bust

Here are some of the lastest WIP pictures of 71st Highlanders Bust from Sovereign 2000

I have begun to sketch out the geometric pattern on the cap band. This area was first base coated with XF2 White then washed with Nuln Oil to pick out the sculpted lines. Then I begun to roughly sketch out the red squares of the pattern using vallejo 985 Hull Red.

I have made some more progress on the body over the weekend, still have a long list of things to do but getting there nicely I will layout what has been done so far.

Tunic

This was base coated using XF9 Hull Red using an airbrush. XF7 Flat Red was drybrushed over the top of this to pick out the shadows and highlights. This was blended using XF7 Flat Red again this time using the airbrush. A highlight was applied using several thin layers of British Scarlet 238 from coat d'arms.

Tunic Collar

This has only been base coated so far using a mix of

Vallejo MC Khaki + Panzer Aces Highlight Japanese Tank Crew
988 332
1 : 4

Officers Sash

This was based using Vallejo 985 Hull Red.

I like using either XF9 Hull Red, 985 Hull Red or 859 Black Red as a base coat for colours of the red family. I used to exclusively use Black Red until I was made aware of the safety issues of airbrushing with it. So I switched to Hull Red which I can airbrush using XF9 and touch up brush paint using 985.
I highly recommend finding out what pigments are used in your paints and whether they are safe to airbrush with, you can usually find safety information from the manufacturer. I did and labelled all the paints I can't airbrush with. I also have slowly built up a good airbrush paint range using Model air, Tamiya and Game air so I have an airbrush equivalent to most colours.

A mid tone was applied to the areas of highlight and glazed over the shadows to blend using a mix of

985 Hull Red + 946 Dark Red
1 : 1



Coat

This was airbrushed using a mix of

XF68 Nato Brown + XF52 Earth + XF49 Khaki
1 : 2 : 2

Then washed using a mix of Coat d'arms 502 Field Drab + 216 Dark Brown

This was blended with my airbrush from above using

XF68 Nato Brown + XF52 Earth + XF49 Khaki
1 : 2 : 7

A further blending was achieved using the same method with XF49 Khaki

The coat was then drybrushed successively using the following mixes

(1) Vallejo MC Khaki + Panzer Aces Highlight Japanese Tank Crew
988 332
1 : 1

The seams were lined using Game Air 745 Charred Brown and then blended using thinned 988 Khaki

Coat Fur Lining

Base coated using 745 Charred Brown

Drybrushed using 034 Bonewhite

Drybrushed using

034 Bonewhite + Panzer Aces 344 White
1 : 1

Drybrushed again using Panzer Aces 344 White.

This is everything so far I have done a lot of dry brushing on this bust this is due to some very heavily sculpted textures which are ripe for dry brushing.

Further work has been done on the officers sash

I have applied an initial highlight of

985 Hull Red + 946 Dark Red
1 : 3

To blend the shadows were glazed with a mix of

985 Hull Red + 946 Dark Red
1 : 2

Then a further highlight of

985 Hull Red + 946 Dark Red + 957 Flat Red
1 : 3 : 1


I am trying for as subtle as possible transition between the shadows and highlights as possible.
