Hi All

As I wait for the base to arrive to complete my Middlesex Regiment bust I thought I'd get started on my next project.

I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Cheers

Taking the parts out of the box, I was impressed by the quality however there were a few casting imperfections that required a bit of work and filling in a couple of instances.

The majority of the casting block(?) mass was dealt with by my trusting Dremel and an assortment of high speed cutters. I've collected a number of power tools and and drop saws over the years but the Dremel is my favourite by far. The remnants of the blocks were then finished off by hand.

Today's task will be the smaller pieces, such as straps, gun stock and buckles.

Cheers

Not a huge amount done today other than finishing up the smaller pieces and sanding back the green stuff putty filler on a couple of pieces. That was followed by some dry fitting.

It's the first Young Min kit that I've done and although I wasn't expecting the casting blemishes after reading other reviews on here, the reports on great fits were bang on the money.

Will hopefully get some time to wash the castings and do some prep for priming tomorrow.

Cheers

Not sure if you know but If you want to put pics in the post then click on either thumbnail or full image onc you have finished uploading them .

Looks a very detailed bust.

Thanks Bob, yes I agree. The next step is to sit down with a cuppa and work out how much I assemble pre-paint or whether I go down the individual component route and then assemble. As a newbie this is the challenge.

Nice clean construction so far - looks great
Cheers

Thanks Mat. I like to take my time on the clean up as it can have a big impact on the finishing.

That's a nice start mark, looking forward to this one (y)

Thanks Smudger, just taking it easy and thinking it through.

Made the most of the remaining summer weather yesterday so not a lot done. I did manage to get some time to drill the pieces and insert brass rods, wash them and set them up ready for priming.

Not that exciting progress, but a bit of progress none the less.

Just a quick update as not a lot of progress this week due to normal life commitments. The main components have been primed by airbrush using AK Interactive Olive Drab. The face was primed using the NZ equivalent of the Halfords grey primer.

All of the smaller components are still in the process of being primed.

Finally back after a bit of a break. Started a new job, back mid March and just been too tired to do anything on the weekends. Finally have regained the modelling mojo and started back again today.

Have started to put brush to canvas, so to speak and started to block in some colours. I've been thinking of trying something different from my normal method for this bust. Probably not that revolutionary but we'll see how it goes. The plan is to block in all of the colours first, then work on the shading, rather than completing each section and moving on to the next.

Interested to know if anyone else works this way or whether It's not done this way for a good reason? Or is it the way it's done and I've just been doing it wrong up to now?

Here's a few pics of progress

Mark,

Congratulations on the new job and good to have you back at the bench as well

I do a base colour then work on one action at a time till complete , if there are parts to fit then depending on them I build first then paint on the bust .

This is coming on well ...do share your colours if you can

Looking forward to more

Yes that's how I would normally work, but with this bust there are only a few additional parts to fit. That's why I've decided to try something different and see how it goes.

I'm just about to head off to work, but I'll post the colours used so far tonight.

Cheers

Hi All

Here's a few more pics of the colour blocking coming along.

20160627_181026.jpg20160627_181036.jpg20160627_181050.jpg20160627_181103.jpg

The colours used so far are as follows:

Primer: AK Interactive Olive Drab (AK182)
Parachute Harness: 3 x drops AK Interactive RAL Cremeweiss (AK092) + 2 drops of AK Interactive Light Grey Brown (AK786)
Material over the harness: equal amounts of Lifecolor UA427 (Olive Drab Green Tone) + Lifecolor UA425 (Olive Drab Yellow Tone) + mix in Lifecolor UA429 (Olive Drab Red Tone) to get the warmer yellow tone
Lifevest (Mae West): Andrea Color - Yellow base tone
Jump Jacket: Lifecolor UA425 (Olive Drab Yellow Tone), just one coat so far.

As mentioned in an earlier post, as there's not so many parts to fit i'm going to base block everything first then work on the fun part of bringing it to life.

Another thing I did since starting up again was to get a little spiral bound watercolour book to record colours and colour mixes. It's handy when you come back to it after a few weeks/months break.

This is an example of the base colours and some mixing trials.
