Hi all,

I'm working on this 1/16 bust of a Hussar and thought I'd share it with the group. I'm doing this to break up a bigger project I've been working on and have been playing with the Scale 75 artist acrylics which I've really enjoyed. I don't really have the vocabulary or knowledge to give a meaningful explanation of what makes them different to Vallejo Model Colour (my normal paints) but they are rather nice and blend more easily.

The sculpt is odd, there's something about the face that makes it a little cartoonish IMO (in the box art as well as my attempt) which is a little challenging. Overall I'm happy with the way it looks so far, I am working on NMM braiding on the tunic and then I'll go back over it to tidy up the blue. The face needs a little something, I'm not sure what though. Maybe a touch more red in the cheeks. I'm also thinking he needs some more highlights on the fur.

As always, comments, questions and so on are welcome.

The face looks fine to me but I agree the fur needs a little more in the way of highlights, though not that much. I'm liking how you're doing the Hussar braiding.

Cheers Simon

That's coming on well. The face doesn't look look to bad to me, maybe a tad more shadow on the chinscales. The braid is coming on nicely, is he an officer or trooper? You can add a tad more highlight to the fur, maybe a light ochre o the extreme highlights. Otherwise looking good

Thanks gang. I think he is an officer, judging from the pelise, so I’m hoping to get it close to shiny gold. I wonder if I need to go over all of the braid in the colour I’ve used for a highlight and then use a lighter highlight. I’ve added some highlights to the fur and cleaned up the blue a bit. The neck is horrible, not sure how to fix that.

Some better shots:

His furry bits look great now, it's been too long since I used NMM so I won't comment on what you said other than don't go too light with the highlights. Probably want to try fine black lining on the collar, between the piping and neck and as shade under the collar piping. Otherwise he's looking rather good, you've done a good job.

Cheers Simon

As the braid is generally a woven or plaited material, rather than just line the top surface with highlight have a row of dots there instead.
I may also make his hair darker of lighter to differentiate it from the other fur.
Good work
Melanie

Thanks, I might try that with the braid but it’s pretty tiny and I’m finding yellow paints are too opaque to do details like that. I’ll keep playing and then might try an ivory highlight in the pattern you suggest. It’s pretty tiny braid though so it’ll be a real challenge
