I finally finished off this Art Girona figure earlier this week. I have to say I was pretty happy with the result, in the sense that I think I finally achieved the high contrast between in the values that really make these 54mm figures pop out at the viewer. I was also pretty happy with the scratch built picket fence, which I made from some balsa wood scraps, and the ground work in general. So, please let me know if you think it "works" or not, especially where the colour contrast is concerned. Thanks for looking everyone! Next up is Pegaso's 54mm Crusader, which you'll all have to wait until January 1 to see, as it's part of the group build project here on the planet. (I'm finshed, but can't post until the deadline has passed)

Cheers;
Glenn

Thanks Rocco and Jay.

Rocco, I always paint black belts with brown highlights after seeing someone do that here on the planet. Its little tips like that one I picked up here that makes this a great site!

Jay, I'm glad you like the highlights on the jaket. That's the very effect I was trying to go for on this figure so Its gratifying that others notice the effort.

If there's something you see that I could improve on please let me know.

Glenn, that's a really nice piece of work you have there. I will agree with others regarding the belts etc. My only comment would be (if your paint in oils), that in some shadows you need to blend more.. because you go directly from deep shadow to your base blue.. (at his back.. below his neck for example.. )you need an intermediate color between those 2. Take care :)

Xenofon

Hi Glenn,

He turned out really well. The blues are great. I have been thinking of ordering this one to go with my ACW drummer

Thanks everyone. I see what you mean Xenofon. I usually paint in oils, but used humbrol enamels for most of this. I agree that a second, intermediate colour would
be useful on that back shadow. I wonder if I can still work that in somehow?

Paul, this was a really nice figure to paint. I think the addition of a drummer would make a perfect little vignette.

Mario, Guy, and Dan, as always, thank you for your kind comments. I sometimes wish the judges at shows were as encouraging as you all are.

Glenn.
Beautifull work. I like this figure very much.
Now, for that color on the back. When you do it with oils it isn't a problem at all. Just make that color, some touch with the paint on the figure and feather it out. .

Thank you Costas. I'm especially glad you like the face, as my version of this figure had a small defect in the molding where the left eye socket is, and I had to try to repair it with some magic sculp putty. I wasn't sure if I was successfull or not ( I am NO sculpter) but it seems to have worked out.

Hello Glenn, this is one to be proud of certanly. I've got to say as well that you've done a good repair job on him. And it can be ery easy to get downhearted if you have to reach for the putty...

I'm just preparing this one ! But I'm not making a drum sergeant major of it.
You've painted it very good. I've got just one remark.
Sergeant majors in the civil war didn't have a star between the strips. This came much later after the war. So you should remove it to be fully correct. Unfortunately it is already finished of course

Gary and Chris; Thanks for your kind comments.

Anthony, downhearted doesn't even begin to describe it, I have to say I have a new respect for the sculpters who make figures in this scale.

Patrick, Thanks you for your comments as well. I think you will enjoy painting this figure. I just went with the box art, and the star in the chevrons was sculted onto the sleeve so I figured it was supposed to be there. Perhaps I can make up some story of him representing a special unit or something ;)

Patrick, Latorre also did not get the back of the frock coat correct (no surprise). He left the vent and a few pleats completely out. Fortunately with a little bit of putty it can be easily added.~Gary
