Thanks Adrian - the eyes look a bit brown on the last picture I notice, but they look greener in real life. :) They are very compelling though and were a challenge to do compared with the tiny dots on a 54 mm figure. Feel free to post yours if you've got the images, I'd love to see it (I'm not at all precious about threads. I think they are more of an online chat between folks who all chip in with their views or experiences; makes the whole exercise of posting more fun IMO)(y)

Here’s my version Paul.
Note that I added some hair to her forehead, to increase resemblance to the photograph.

Cheers,
Adrian

Blimey Adrian that's a cracker mate (y)
(No pressure now) :ROFLMAO:

I like the added hair which I was also wondering about. . . .

Thanks for showing us (I'll print it off as an extra reference if I may)

Manged a little bit more this morning (I usually work in little blocks of 30 -40 minutes at a time which fits in with family life and allows me to switch off for a bit) :)

Basically refined the colours a bit and went back to work on the highlights and shadows. Once I was happy with the overall tone (I check by squinting through half closed eyes) I started to build up the colours using a stippling action with the brush and a little glaze medium added into the colours to slow the drying down a bit. Doesn't look like much difference between the pictures due to a special 'blurry vision' camera borrowed from Nap :D, but it look more apparent in real like. Feels like it's starting to come together now and I can start adding a few glazes and more interesting colours to bring it to life a bit.

Looking at Adrian's picture I'll give it an extra thumbs up since I noticed the nice bit of reflected red on the shadow side of the face . . . little details like that make all the difference (y) (I would use a clapping hands emoji except I can't find one Adrian, sorry)

Cheers for now
Paul

Brilliant work, Paul. Shading & blending on the face looks really smooth, & of course the eyes really jump out just like the original photograph.
Funnily enough, about three months ago I was sitting in my doctor’s waiting room (before the current pandemic) & picked up a magazine from the shelf to look at, & it was that very same issue of National Geographic.

Hi Leggy

Really coming together now you star of the WP ...lol

Glad the camera helped ...Need it back to make my feeble efforts look reasonable

No problem K., thanks for the loan. Amazing what modern technology can do . . .

(Speaking of cameras anyone remember the 2 1/4" square camera's? I used to use one for portrait and wedding photography many, many moons ago. )

Her name is Shabat Gula, the original picture was taken by photographer Steve McCurry in 1985...:

This is like Shabat Gula looked 2016...

an this in 2017...:

The pictures tell more than many words about the hard living conditions - especially for women! - in Afghanistan ...

Cheers

saddly true.....

A little more progress on the face. :)
I've increased the contrasts a bit by adding light flesh and burnt red/dark brown to the skin mix. I've also used a bit of glaze medium to add in a few tints to the nose and hairline. Eyes also had a bit of extra work and started to work on the eyebrows (which will need some more) The red clothing look okay in the picture, but not in reality - I just put a very thin wash of red over the primer to get a sense of the colour.
Photo's are taken in natural sunlight this morning with me holding the figure in one hand so they are a bit blurry I'm afraid.
Where does all the time go? seems very little difference between the last three sessions when I look back at the photoso_O

Anyway now the sun has come up again I'm off to work on the clothing

Thanks Bob :)

For those who've been watching. Many thanks for the encouragement first of all (y) Keeps one going when things go a little bit 'pear-shaped' anyway I'm now calling this one finished (although I usually re-visit them after they've been sitting on the shelf for a while just to see if they need any tweaks . . .

Here's the pallet I used for the robe. I steered away slightly from complete accuracy of the colour and used some of the paints I'd already used elsewhere rather than introduce new shades. The robe was great fun to paint with lots of stippled brushmarks for the coarse fabric effect which looks more apparent in the flesh.

Now off to finish something with more legs :D

Paul,
I absolutely adore your version - it looks like she stepped out of that iconic photo. Thanks for showing your progress (and your pallett); I've saved it all for possible future use.
Cheers
