WIP Austro-hungarian Mountain Troops - Bust 1/9

This is much closer to my first idea about the rope, but I messed up mixing MS and make it too hard - could not rool thinner without breaking.
I think it's much closer to the original picture, but it should be tinner, hope that next (thinner) version of the rope will be final

The feathers look fine to me, but how are you going to cast them? I don't know much about casting, but won't they be very difficult to cast from putty? You could use lead or brass foil to make them and they'd be much more durable. Just a suggestion.

I agree that the rope still looks too thick. I'm not sure I'd even make rope for this bust; maybe just leave it out. On the other hand sometimes I get lucky with 'found' materials. Maybe just some string of the right size which has been knotted and rolled and glued together in the proper way. If you chose to leave out the rope, you could do a compass or snowshoes or an ice ax. Snowshoes might be a real trial to sculpt. Probably lots of other choices.

As far as the M1895/30, I'm going to try to upload some photos from an antique weapons auction site. The poster on that site says the photos are of an M1895/30, but I'm no firearms expert. I have a few more I can add if you need them.

If you are only doing the barrel and a bit of the upper stock, take a look at the sixth photo above. Both the rifle and carbine had an unusual looking parallel rod offset from the gun barrel. No idea what it was for. Would you like some photos of other possibilities - snowshoes, compass, ice ax, ??

I think it's too late for the compas because I did not plan space for that belt and it would be difficult to put it in this stage. Ice axe would be nice if I find a way to "connect" it to the bust, I have no hands to hold it...

How about an Austrian mountaineer's back pack - you might be able to do part of it on a bust.

Unfortunatelly for the backpack I did not make belts, and they should be visible in the front.
Ice Axe looks tempting, it would be nice to have it. But I have no idea how to incorporate it into the bust as there are no hands to hold it, and the belt that axe is attached is outside of the scope.
Maybe I'll do a whole figure in 1/16 one day

Great looking figure!! Why don't you use twisted copper wire to make your rope? It would look much more realistic.

Maybe some really soft type of wire...

I tried copper wire and could not make it to look realistic as it was too stiff, and it would be a pain to cast.

You could anneal it, you can make copper very soft if necessary. But once woven into a braid I'm not sure that it wouldn't have stiffened up a bit too much again.

What I was going to suggest initially was looking for an existing woven cord/string that could stand in for rope at a small scale, you can often find something although I'm not sure about exactly this gauge.

I added too much hardener, and then waited too long. Freshly mixed MS was not good for rope as it was to sticky, and I was loosing an oval form when rolling it around the center- so I had to wait for MS to get a bit stiff to do that.
Second rope is done that way also, but I started a bit earlier and added a bit less of hardener.

I think there should not be a bayonet on the gun, as it was relatively unusual in fighting in mountain combat.

The gun had to be as short as possible in order not to hinder the carrier - which is why the guys were equipped with the Stutzen.

A bayonet would extend the weapon again and would rather have been an obstacle.

Here is a possible solution:

It is very soft soldering wire (I did not have enough to do actual rope, but it was enough for test).
Now, if I use this, must figure out how to put some texture on it (it's so shiny) , and how to cast it later...

Since for the mountain troops were no extra weapon, it is actually in the bracket to the bayonet!
The carabiner is Similar to the gun, but shorter!
Therefore, you can install it with quiet!

I recommend you can in this regard some very good firearms books!
