Thanks Scott.
This link is like gold to me. I have The Fusilier kit GWAH/01 on order and will be starting it later this spring. Not a lot of WW1 Austro-Hungarian color pics to be had. These will be a great help to me.
Much appreciated.

My pleasure, glad it was as appreciated by someone else, not just me. I just started on a Metal Models Austrian, I stripped the little devil of my first abortive attempt to paint it. The little photo that comes with the kit is not really remotely accurate, and books only go so far. To see the real thing is awesome!

Alas, I am not as good a figure painter as I am a modeler, and I'm not as good a modeler as I wish I was, but I enjoy myself and have a great time. That's what its about after all.

Awesome pictures! Unfortunately, from my other references and particularly the best one I know about, The Emperor's Coat in the First World War, the colors of the uniforms look a little too brownish. Some of them look as brown as British uniforms. Probably the lighting. The lighting in photos in the Emperor's Coat was done by professional photographers and museum curators, so I take it as being on the money. It's a marvelous book and shows just about every AH uniform from 1914 - 1918, but unfortunately expensive.

Here's a link to a AH site that you might find useful. http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/

An excellent and much cheaper reference you might consider is World War I Infantry in Colour Photographs by Laurent Mirouze and published by the Crowood Press/Histoire & Collections as Europa Militaria No. 3, 1999. ISBN 1 86126 288 4. 60 some pages of large color photos of WWI uniforms including AH. It was out of print for awhile, but now, I believe, another edition has been printed. Should be able to get a cheaper used copy from e-Bay, Amazon, Abebooks, etc.

All the best,
Dan

Good comments Dan.

Yeah, I think it is the lighting, these are in progress pics of the display. However I tend to go with collectors who know their stuff more than museums, having worked at museums in exhibits I know how things are fudged or represented with stand ins well. I do appreciate quality displays and pro photography, and I think the Emperor's Coat is a fantastic book (I've seen it).

I thought I'd share the wealth of this collector as he's one of the authorities on this stuff. The uniforms may look off, but they are authentic, and I do think the lighting is the culprit.

That forum I linked to is attached to mosin-nagant.net, and depsite all the books and publications on Russian and Finnish militaria, the guy who owns that board is THE world's acknowledged English speaking expert on Mosin Nagants and Russian/Finn militaria. It is a great site, because those who are serious about uniforms, militaria and weapons are also on that site. Wait until you see the purpose of this display. It will put anything before it to shame, I'm sure.

Thy added some more pics today... ;)

Oh, and this is not my stuff, not my message board, I just have found great benefit from hangin' around those guys. There's also a thread there on the Armenian revolt if you like that era.

Yes, Scott, I saw the link to the Mosin-Nagants and I totally agree about that site! Excellent reference materials and photos! I used some photos from it to do a rifle conversion. I certainly never meant to imply that the uniforms on the site were anything but authentic. The collector even makes disclosures about items that are missing or "fill-ins". Few do that! I was just commenting on the colors because I didn't want a painter to be misled, etc.

Not so much the lighting but the background reflectance or maybe printing (?) cause some of the colors in the Mirouze book to look a little off to me also. Or maybe it's just my eyes!!!!

I guess another thing to keep in mind is that all these uniforms are 80 odd years old and the colors have certainly faded by now.

All the best,
Dan

Hey Dan,

Hope I didn't come off rude, I wasn't implying anything, just singing the praises of the guy, he's got some amazing stuff.

Hope that it came in useful!
:)

Scott - Not a bit of it! I totally agree that the collector has done a fine job amassing that collection. I envy him greatly - that's a very substantial investment of not only money, but research and checking references and details! He seems to know his militaria! I wonder if he'd be willing to display his collection at a model figure show? That would be terrific, wouldn't it? Wonder if the show organizers have ever thought about that?

All the best,
Dan
