The only advice that I could give you is something that I learned from a couple guys that give classes about vikings at a museum here in MA. called the Higgins Museum. They said, metals would have been pretty scarce for your average farmer, which was basically your average viking type. Most weapons were passed down from generation to generation etc. But the one lesson thing that they comes to mind that I can pass on to you was that the edge of the shield would have been in most cases leather, possibly even layered and very very seldom metal but not impossible depending on the man's wealth, and according to them, you'd have to be a very wealthy individual to have metal.
