The only advice that I could give you is something that I learned from a couple guys that give classes about vikings at a museum here in MA. called the Higgins Museum. They said, metals would have been pretty scarce for your average farmer, which was basically your average viking type. Most weapons were passed down from generation to generation etc. But the one lesson thing that they comes to mind that I can pass on to you was that the edge of the shield would have been in most cases leather, possibly even layered and very very seldom metal but not impossible depending on the man's wealth, and according to them, you'd have to be a very wealthy individual to have metal.

I hope this helps, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers!

John

P.S. I'm always checking your web site for new things, to this day I'm still facinated with your clocks. WOW! That's really a great idea.

Thanks John, thanks your support ^^

Attached is another new product, Crusader, 90mm.

Hello John!

Im afraid I have to disagree with those people about the metal being scarsce.

An overwhelming number if not all of the shields that have been found show signs of a metal rim and boss. And many have been strengthened with metal straps.

Additionally Ive never seen it mentioned that iron was rare and expensive. Salt on the other hand was expensive and rare.

Experiments with 25kg of red claylike soil with much iron in it(pretty common here in Scandinvia), an ironage meltingpot in the ground, 4 scholars(first time) and a weekend resulted in 8kg iron.

Most shields had its front covered with leather, hide preferably from Elks for great strenght. But also bear in mind that shields took a lot of beating and were repaired and replaced usning old rims and bosses.

Swords were not that comman in favor of axes but thats hardly a result of iron shortage but rather the work and experience that it took to make a sword compared to an axe. As well as the axe could be pretty hande in other scenarios than fighting.

Cheers
