Hi,

What can I say about this book!!! I sadly bought a book by someone called "Bill Horan" off Amazon a few days ago. What a load of crap!! Talking about blowing ones trumpet. This person couldn't paint figurines if his life depended on it. I have never seen figurines painted so baldly. I am trying to resell this damn book on Ebay. Okay, I'm sure there are people out there that love is art work, not me. I sadly bought two of his books, damn I wished I hadn't. All I can say is stay clear, it is some person blowing his trumpet.

Please show us a sample of your work. I have waited twenty-five years or more to see work superior to Horans. And waited and waited...

Well, Peter, that's a pretty bold and aggressive statement, your bar must be set very high, care to share any examples? A link or two maybe?

Well if it was 'load of crap' it's a good thing you bought two. Stay clear? A little late, as a good portion of us own a copy and have not regretted it.

All that aside, you are not making a very good impression on the community here with a first posting monologue slamming a book authored by one of the figure pioneers of our art.

Welcome aboard nonetheless. :)

Billi is Bill....probably the most famous modeler behind Shep.
I've only seen a few of his pieces here, so I don't know if it's enough, but the new (Russian I believe) fellow that did the "Veteran" and the "Thracian" and painted the "Secutor" is by far the best all around sculptor/painter I've ever seen. Bar none. No one I've seen comes near him, really.
I would imagine that his work in person is even more spectacular, if that's possible.
Vorobiov Ruslan is his name. Breathtaking...they look like tiny people, not miniatures.
They are so good, IMO, that he has created a new level, that, so far, he's on alone..

I forgot to mention Kermit, you've got to learn to come out of your shell! LOL!
Let it all out, son....

Phil, a couple of clarifications regarding your comments about Bill Horan.

Bill terms his works "conversions", owing to his documented use of commercial parts. Only his baseball figures, I believe, could be considered to be "sculpts", in the sense of being created from scratch.

Regarding sculpting, I not aware that he's ever produced an original bust, like the Russian gentleman you referenced, although I am no final authority on that subject.

Regarding his painting, Bill made advances in the state of the art that were significant at the time. Like an athlete who smashes a record by a large margin, Bill's figures altered the landscape of the hobby, and inspired many to push the art form in many new directions, and for that, as well as his many other contributions to this hobby, his reputation has been well earned.

Notwithstanding the sadly misinformed, not to mention unnecessarily spiteful, comments of the newly-arrived Mr. Wilkinson.

(Great first impression.)

Sometimes we treat "famous" and "best" as synonyms, when they are not.

Sometimes our "opinions" appear in the guise of "statements", when they are not.

This is an imperfect medium, to be sure. But I'm glad we have it!

Best regards,

Don

Well Peter,

welcome to the planet...I too must sing Bill's praises. His Gandamak galvanized me! That book was given to me by my wife as an anniversary gift....that's how badly I wanted it.

I read Military modelling in the 80's just because Bill's stuff was featured there.

That said, the hobby is always moving and improving, so please post some of your work, I'm always willing to pick up a new trick or two to better present my own material.

Best,

Kevin D

Gotta be a joke, right? No one has even approached Horan insofar as pure painting skills, innovation, creation of different faces, anatomy, imagination, composition, and groundwork. A few excellent busts or even 10 pieces of superior work doesn't approach his level of work and volume of quality. If the poster would like to exhibit his work here, we'd all like to see it.

And if the post isn't a put-on, then it's a good example that jealousy and ignorance are unattractive attributes. Sad.

Not sure if this is a joke or not, and if so, why!!!!
Anyway, if you know anything about figure modelling, then you would have to know who Bill Horan is before purchasing his book. If you dont, then why buy two of his books???? I mean a quick google would show you who he is and his style of work, and then you could descide whether to purchase his books or not. Waste of hard earned money otherwise, there are many here who would kill for that book.
Also, you can have an opionion on whether you like Bill's style and work or not, that is everyone's right, but to openly "bag" him on a forum without having any formal explanation is down right rude.

“How to win Friends and Influence People”,

Maybe thats the book that you should have bought, not the greatest of first posts, I too would be interested in seeing a few of your converted and scratch built 54mm figures, just for reference you understand. Of course a list of your achievements within hobby would obviously be something worth reading.

As for blowing his own trumpet, for many within the hobby (clearly, you are not included in that) Bill Horan has been a leading light in the advancement of figure building, since he burst into hobby in the late 1980’s. And most would say, he has earned a right to blow his own trumpet, considering he has Won Best of Show at every major competition around the world.

You really know how to make a poor first impression don't you?

Rather than throw your opinions around like confetti, why don't you show us what you've done to enhance our hobby and show us all the books you've published and show us examples of all the Best of Show's you've won at major international competitions.

Either put up or shut up, and show some bloody respect to the members of this magnificent forum, most of whom respect Bill as a talented artist and leader in our community, and are not interested in sharing our forum with idiots.

If you want to flame one of the world's best figure modellers, do it on another website, or better, keep your ignorant opinions to yourself.

I guess what's been said is all that needs to be said. Best to be the Grey Man and learn your environment before you go and make a mess of yourself. I hope you do better on another forum.

O.K. gentlemen, let's say it all together: "The member calling himself "Kermit" is a troll who is killing himself (I hope he does a thorough job) with laughter at his fine "joke" at our expense.
Let me guess, small fry; you knew of Bill Horan's reputation as a master modeler but couldn't think of the name of one of his books, so you omitted it, even though you claim that you bought two -- too lazy to Google it?
Go away and play, sonny; at least go away.

????

Not right in the head, or to much Squadron Green Putty sniffing???

Kermie my love, said in my best Miss piggy voice. When I take one of the said books from its shrine, to sit in awe of talent. I realise what got me into this hobby in the first place. OK, new styles have come a long, but Mr Horan is and will always be Mr Horan.
Thanks for the laugh any way,
Carl.

Everyone is free to have his opinion, especially in the area of taste.
But if this indeed is a fake post, which it probably is, let me just say to Kermit that I find his humor rather nerdy and a bit sad.
