Has anybody had any experience with this way of painting, eg Scale75's Laural and Hardy, I'm thinking of doing a B&W vignette with a bit of red, in the style of Schindlers List, but wanting to know if there are any tricks or pitfalls.

I have no experience here, I have seen the painting of the 75 team and they painted it with the experience of watching on actual TV made for colour so depending of the the TV setting where there is always a dominant colour , it was a very good rendition
True black and white is ... black and white, nothing else .
I would try painting all white ( Humbrol or Acrylic), let it dry, applying a wash of black ( oil) then wiping with a sponge, and begin to apply white and blending, white and blending, white and ....
Never done that but the result would be true black and white .

Thankyou Micofsoft, I may have to have a practice on an old figure.
