Need some advice. I am using the old Hornet offering of a MP as the basis for my latest project and my references are limited (net, Osprey). I plan to paint an early war 'redcap' wearing khaki webbing. One of the Osprey plates shows a MP wearing 'white' sleeves over his battle blouse but with a 'CT' brassard. My question would it be possible for me to add white sleeves and still retain the red cap, black/red MP brassard and khaki webbing? Or was the white sleeves specific to a unit?

My concern is obviously accuracy. Is my combination of equipment legit or are the various elements of the uniform/gear specific to different times during the war? Would such a soldier carry a Thompson early in the war? (I know they were equipped with Stens after D-Day)

Cheers

Hi Paul!

Cool project and a great figure - I did a version a couple of years ago.

As far as I know, the white sleeves were worn by any MP doing traffic control duty. Most of my references are of "Pointsmen" directing traffic outside Britain, where they are often wearing a beret instead of the red cap, although I have a Malcolm MacGregor plate in an Andrew Mollo book that shows a British MP in Italy wearing both the sleeves and the red cap topper that was slipped over the khaki service cap. In short, I think yer good to go. As for the Thompson, they were used by the Brits and Canadians in Italy, so your guy might have gotten a hold of one. The Canadian Military Police Virtual Museum website (http://mpmuseum.org) states that they were on limited issue to the Canadian Provost officers.

Hope this is of some use.

Cheers,

Brian
