I have started painting one of my busts, the bust of T Hardy who was the most decorated soldier in the British army during WW1, being awarded the Victoria Cross for all of the support he gave to troops on the front line - often venturing into no-man's land to recover wounded soldiers.

The box art by Peter Day - quite an act to follow, fortuntely my style and technique are quite different.

I apply a base cost of Vallejo Acrylic:

Then apply oil paints, here are the head and torso which have had their first application of oil paints:

They are now drying overnight in the airing cupboard before I add more glazes of oil to create highlights and shadows

You did a loverly version, a nice subtle variation.

Looking good so far. He was one of the most decorated officers: one MO (Chevasse) was awarded a VC and Bar posthumously another (Martin-Leake) was awarded a bar to his VC.....

Mike - yes, and the third double VC was in WW2 was Charles Upham.

I think busts of Martin-Leake in his Boar War uniform and WW1 uniforms would make a very nice pair.

Hi All

Here is the result of today's work - mainly working on the cloth of the jacket and a bit on the belt. Lots more to do but I am pleased so far.

Hi Steve

It is pouring with rain today so I may get a chance to work on him this afternoon to have a go at the buttones etc.

I'm reasonably pleased with it. Oils over acrylic is slow but I think I am making progress.
