Cartridge paper: I saw this referred to in a modeling book published in England. Does anyone know what it is or what the equivalent is that I can use here in the U. S.?

Er, it's a bit vague I'm afraid but generally it's used to describe a medium paper (as in weight) of the type used in cheap sketchpads these days. In the context it was used you should be able to substitute any white paper with a smooth finish that's not too heavy.

Interestingly given where you're asking this the term might have a military origin, paper of a similar type or weight was used to wrap powder and ball in a neat package before the advent of metal casings.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, cartridge paper is " thick rough paper used for cartridges, for drawing and for strong envelopes (corruption of cartouche)." What does "Webster's" say?

Hello Linda,

Cartridge paper is a medium-weight, slightly rough-textured paper used for pencil drawing. Think 'business card' with a grained texture.

Well, that pretty well makes sense given how it was used: pieces of it cut out & pasted onto a cardboard (or wooden) wall to simulate stones! Thanks to all who replied--now I can proceed with my 'abandoned watchtower' diorama!
