I am trying to depict one of Metal Modeles beautiful figures of a Garde Grenadier in his greatcoat, as a Garde Chasseur. My question lies with his bear skin. I have removed the front plate and the patch from its top and the cords. My dilemma lies with the front tassel. Most illustrations labeled Chasseur that I’ve found show twin tassels as opposed to a single one. One colored illustration had one tassel green and one red. Does anyone have any definitive thoughts? I suppose having none at all might also be correct ( and maybe the easiest way out). I’m not usually that much of a nitpicker, but if the info is available why not use it. Anything that I have read does not mention it at all.

Thanks,
Kurt

Having none seems the ideal solution. When on long Campaigns, items went missing especialy decorative ones, with little or any chances of replacments. Think about those Black Leather Stocks, they were discarded at the first oppotunity and replaced with black scarves, other items like Plumes, buttons, and the cords on Shako's went missing too. Frankly I'm supprised you don't see more of this in miniature.Soldiers carried what kept them alive, not what made them look pretty. Ray

the infantry guard chasseur has 2 tassels on the busby. my version attached has only a single tassels because Italian Veliti.

red and green are for NCO, trooper had all the cords white

Ivo, Thanks for the reply! I was actually very taken by your figure and was blatantly trying to do something similar. I should have gone directly to you. So there will be two white tassels. I hope you don’t mind, I am just getting back to this hobby and need to get my basic techniques back if thats possible. I am an old ( to say the least) Historex freak. I am very impressed with the Metal Modeles figures. What really amazes me I can order a figure from Switzerland and it’s in my mail box in the US in 5 days ( this has happened several times). England takes about 21 days and Italy about 40 days, so I’m really impressed.

Ray, I agree with you about field realities with regards to uniforms, but in this case the only difference would have been green epaullete straps instead of red.
Again, thanks to you both.,

Kurt

Hello Kurt,
The information I have to hand would indicate 2 white tassels for rank and file. For NCO's 2 coloured tassels -- red and green for both with gold (Rousselot) , or one green and gold and the other red and gold ( Jouninea and Monigin) with more gold for sergeant-major than sergeants. One has to remeber also that in the French army coporals do not count as N.C.O.s.
However a way out of this could be ---> as the figure is on the march, the plume is already off and in the back pack, or it was often wraped in an oiled cloth and tied to the sabre briquet scabbard, the tassels and raquettes could be in the pack.
Choices. Good luck with your painting.
