Nice work Nigel, even so small a patch of tartan is daunting, looking forward to the German and then seeing them together.

Cheers Simon

Hi Nigel

That Highlander looks really good , very impressive painting , liking the bobble and fine research as well

Looking forward to seeing the next figure .......this Vignette is going to look great

Great work so far, the Pom Pom is properly called a Tourie and is more usually the same colour as the ToS. There is an interesting book about two professional footballers who played during the Christmas truce, one from 2nd Argylls and a German lad, whose regiment I can’t remember off the top of my head. I think it ended 2-2. This is a drawing of mine, based on it. I will paint it at some point ☺️
All the best,
Scotty.

Thanks for this, it backs up the print that I found online (on Pinterest, so I don't know where it comes from):

The vignette is clearly based on this print, although it features the incorrect headgear (you have the glengarry in your drawing which is what they would have worn in 1914).

I did a bit more digging and found this article which identifies the Saxon regiment as the 134th: https://www.theoldie.co.uk/blog/scotland-played-germany-in-the-christmas-truce-match-but-who-won Unfortunately some things never change and apparently the Germans won 3-2.

Back to the model, sadly work on the German went badly yesterday and I have decided to repaint what I have done so far. Oh well, every day's a school day :D

Ah that's a shame Nigel but better restarting than keeping on keeping on, sometimes it has to be done and usually works out way better than it otherwise would have.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Steve, appreciate it!

I have finished the Highlander:

On doing a bit of digging I found a print these models are based on and it depicts a soldier from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who wore the Government 1a tartan, which is what I tried to depict. Although as it is mainly dark blue, dark green and black it's hard to see it in the small area I had available to me....

I also researched the tam o'shanter and it looks like the Argyll and Sutherlands had a light coloured bobble, either khaki or light green. So I lightened it up a bit. I also found the figure is inaccurate because the tam o'shanter was not introduced until 1915, in 1914 they would have worn the glengarry cap. But I am not going to resculpt it even though I am a rivet counter!

He needs to be dirtied up a bit, but I shall do this after I have painted the German figure and am working on the groundwork.

What a lovely and neat work on this chap.
Keep up the great work Nigel!

Thanks Daniel! 1/35 is challengingly close to 40mm....... 😉

I've finished the German figure, here's a couple of shots:

The uniform piping details are incorrect for a Saxon regiment (which is what he is supposed to be) but I was not going to correct them. And here's a shot of the two guys roughly posed together to get an idea of the composition (there will be a football in the final scene!):

Next up is the base and groundwork, plus adding some dirt to the figures. They will be in slushy snow with a few icy puddles, and I want to try some splash effects around their feet to give an impression of movement. We'll see how that goes......

Great job on the German fella and they look superb together, can't wait to see the ground work. We'll I can wait, I'll have to but you know what I mean!

Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon, there will be a little bit of a wait because I will be experimenting with various snow and slush effects before committing to the groundwork. I learned you should experiment with new techniques first from my last vignette......

Sorry to hear you had some trouble, sadly this happens to us now and again.
I know at the end of the day you will present us with another masterpiece.
