What No Cloak
Well it was just a thought :D

Mick

Fantastic model mate looking forward to seeing paint on this laddie for sure.

Hi Scotty......edit....Looking at Peter Duckers book on campaign medals it says and I quote .........edit......The Kings South African medal without already qualifying for the Queens , although it was possible to receive just the Queens "....edit.....Interesting eh ! Nap

It's weird and doesn't make sense but absolutely true.
18 men from Liverpol formed a service section to augment 1st Bn Gordon Highlanders and only sailed off on 25march 1902, well after the Queen's death.
they all recieved the Queen's South Africa Medal with four clasps....
S. Africa 1902
'Transvaal'
'Orange Free State' and
'Cape Colony'.

Go figure, and all within Edward's reign.
I wonder why this was done?

Paul

Hi Paul

Thanks for that info ...doesn't make sense as you say but maybe beuarocracy was in action! ...All I am sure wore their medals with clasps with pride ....where are the medals now ..with family or museums?

Did they just get the Queens ?

Unlikely but maybe all served in other units prior to the Queens death ?

Greetings.
Hi Paul Although The Great lady Queen Victoria died on 22nd January 1901,
and proceeded By King Edward the v11 on her death, between that time
and the time of the coronation 9th August 1902 cypers on Buttons Badges medals,
Bank Notes etc etc etc need to change and they try to get it all in place by the coronation.
However in this case Edward was due to receive the Big hat on 26th June 1902 but all changed when on the 24th
he came down with appendicitis and was not crowned until August.
A little like the Irish Guards Authorised and raised under Victoria 1900.
They were presented with their Colours in May 1902. The Regimental Colour carried both Royal Cypers
of Queen Victoria and King Edward V11. And The Kings Colour only carried the Kings cyper,

Hi Keith, I'm back in Blighty and up too early after a long drive," coming in from cold" exile back to Planet Figure and having a look at what everyone else is up to and this thread.
My word this is some monumental pice of sculpting mate, gave me cold shivers at the thought of tackling a subject like this!!
Cracking work mate
Best regards

I wish that I had thought of the cloak before I started. 'would have saved a whole load of gold lace.
Thanks Mate, I always like your comments

Hello Chaps.
Just an update on this sculpt and paint before I disappear into the ether for a month.
The main stumbling blocks have been several reworkings to the sash detail, still not happy with the head and houres of hours painting the base.
I do like to add a related base but this may be a bit too far out of proportion. :cautious:.

Not too much to finish this one but I thought that you may like a peek of where I am with this fellow.
All the best
Keith

Keith,

Not sure how I missed this one earlier - you know I'm usually all over these Guards projects. Really impressive looking piece. What was the second medal you decided on - I can't quite tell from the picture (know the first is the Queen's South Africa medal).

Hope all is well.

Hi Pete,
It's been a while Mate.
We are well here albeit a very wet at the moment.
I hope you are in good shape?
I finally managed to get a 120 mm SA80 rifle but it had a Guardsman attached.

Here is a better view of the medals.
Good to be in touch again

All good in the US 0f A but still waiting for spring to come - it's still bloody freezing!

What is the second medal - don't believe I recognize the ribbon?

Good luck with the SA80 -are you doing surgery? Don't forget that when it was first introduced they didn't have the cover around the stock just over the sight.

Pete
