Progressing well

The bike has some nice weathering so far,
figure is really coming along,

Looking forward to seeing some more posts (that aren't time lapse; though we could pretend you are working that fast in real life!:D)

Cheers

I am very impressed by your work, what you have done with this model is very inspirational.
My Goth friend, can I be allowed to ask if there is a Spliff-monster too?

Great job Mark!!

many thanks

;)

Mark:

I agree with your initial comment that it looks "cartoony"......if you consider the hyper realsitic Final Fantasy style of cartoon that is. Awesome work in a very difficult scale.
Colin

many thanks Colin!

Mark,
what's the circular base you're using a the moment? With those triangles looks like somthin' outta Dr. Who! Are you gonna use that as your actual base? Or is it a temporary?

Lovin' the way this is comin' on!

Cheers,
Jon!

hi Jon! the base is a turntable from "amtech" they sell on evilbay for about $12 with postage, £1.50 from Yorkshire Trading round the corner from my gaff :) i use it for spraying undercoats too.

i may end up basing this onto one but i have no clue yet...

Great work on the weathering Mark!
Looking forward to your next step.

Marcel.

many thanks Marcel.

i dumped the spliff monster many years ago..... :) and thanks

Somewhere i lost this one.
It is awesome. I would like to see some more paintchipping on the exhaust cover.

marc

hi Marc! thanks and i will be adding a bit more chipping around the rear footpeg as hobnail boots will do quite alot of damage i imagine

The progress with this has been great Mark, you doin a top job mate.

Steve

cheers Steve.... i'm takin it steady cos less is more and i don't want to over-do the weathering

thanks again everyone for the comments

Hey Rocky!

the bike is the old ( 1970's ) Esci kit

this is the Esci/Ertl/dragon version that Dragon did a figure for!

i believe Revell are doing them now, including the Kubelwagen!

i so want that kit for use as a wedgie... anyone wanna go halves on one? i would like the back half

:)

Cartoony? Your to hard on your self! Here's an old school trick; go in to a well lighted bathroom and look at your work in the mirror. Or you could just have a beer! Nice work.

I have the original ESCI (unstarted) with sidecar and MG 42. Now I need to find that rider!

lucky man! i'm chasing an esci triumph bike atm, fancy doin a sculpt of an allied rider lol

Well i am back to the figure!

HOOOORAH!

once i am happy with it i'm going to start weathering him!

i've had this thought.... when riding the fabric of the coat will form pretty rigid folds and creases yeah?

so the mud, crud and crap spraying over our man willnot hit the inner areas of the folds ... ? will it?

i dont intend to leave them totally clean but thought some maskol in the creases might work, especially if i remove areas during the weathering process to get an almost variagated look.

any thoughts on that idea folks?

anyhoo.... a picture

Mark,

If you can help me find a rider I can help you find the ESCI bike with the sidecar.

Beautiful painting! How you guys do this with acrylics is beyond me.

Mud splashes

Hiya,
have you googled images for motor cross riders? or mountain bikers might work too.

That might give you an idea of splashes and dribbles of mud.

Most would appear where you would expect, but you are more concerned with gravity effects. Of mud and splashes that is. How does this tie in with a light dusty effect, or is it because he had to zip past a column of Panzers on road march?:D

Like you say though, understated would be better, so as not to hide your outstanding efforts so far.

cheers

Ah Jamie!

i have been mulling this over all the while i was doing the bike...

so..

the bike and rider work together BUT... the bike does'nt stop for a pee, eat dinner, kick the mud off its boots, shake the worst of the crud off its coat and then dry everything out near a stove/fire and get a good 40 winks.

the bike sits outside covered in mud, sometimes rained on and occasionally cleaned.

so there is a build up on the bike that is only partially on the rider... i have a long way to go :)

i expect the boots will be very muddy, up to the knees pretty muddy and then feather it out on the front ( mostly ) of our man

oh HappY day :))

Hi Mark,

Have you tried brushing pastels on??

You can create a wide range of weathering effects from light road dust, to thick mud and mud splatters just using earth coloured pastel chalk and a little bit of water.

The reason I like pastels is they are essentially made of coloured dust, so they work the same way as real dust and dirt. When they're dry you can dust them over the figure to create a light coverage of dust, and when you want to create thicker mud effects you just add some water and then slap it on just like real mud. I usually apply pastels from the boots to the knees on full figures.

I'd also suggest you add a dusting of dark brown/black on the skin of the rider's face to show where he had his goggles over his eyes.

If you use pastels just remember to seal them to the surface by spraying Dull Coat or something similar. If you don't, the pastels will blow away and will lift off if you touch the surface.

Tony and Rocky .....

i certainly will be using some pastels/pastes on the rider as i did the bike.... i want to run through the full set so to speak so first it's all paint effects and then use the paste stuff from tamiya then some ground chalks in distilled water and finally a dusting of dry powdered pastel...

a multi layer effect, should be visually quite pleasing

and thanks for the input

:)
