I've just completed painting this Matt Grech sculpt for El Greco:

100_9651.JPG100_9652.JPG

A characterful sculpt of a Roman legionary wearing a leather cloak.

The cloak was painted with mixes of Vallejo camo black brown, leather brown, flat earth and off white. It was also given a coat of satin varnish to suggest a greasy, waterproofed finish. The lorica was done with mixes of matt black, oily steel and silver.

A long time ago I was privileged to see some of Matt's early sculpting work, before he himself felt it was good enough to go commercial. I was amazed at his skill back then, and I can see from this bust and others he's done, that he is up there with the best.

You have done this one full justice Peter. I'm sure Matt will be well pleased.

Hi Phil

I love the whole deal you get with El Greco - nice box, careful packing and a leaflet giving historical details and a statement of intent by the sculptor. I loved doing this one, and am looking forward to painting Matt's Laconian warrior, which I have in the stash.

I'm pleased that you like what I've done with this one. One of the scary things about PF is that the manufacturers and sculptors often log on to see what you've done with their work.

Yes Peter, that sounds like Matt - thoroughly professional.

I do sometimes think about whether sculptors/manufacturers check out what we're doing with their stuff.

Hi Peter

Always good to see your painting and on a really good sculpt from Matt Grech ..he is I am sure very happy with your version

Like the armour and cloak and the fleshwork really has brought out the character

Look forward to the Laconian when you get decide to paint it

Thanks for sharing

Hey Peter,
That is some really awesome paintwork and I really like this painted version. All the features stand out prominently, capturing the Mediterranean look that I wanted to achieve. Since I can't paint to save my life, it's always a pleasure to see a painted bust. Looking forward to the Laconian.
Cheers,
Matt

Hello Phil - glad to see you back on the scene. It's been a while but glad all is well. Give our best regards to Maureen.

am looking forward to painting Matt's Laconian warrior, which I have in the stash.

Peter - also looking forward to this painted version. Just as a suggestion for the Laconian, use varied shades of red for the bust, so the crest horsehair would be more of a brown-red, whereas the cloth would be a worn red. Anyway, as long as you enjoy painting it - it is always a pleasure to see these pieces come to life.
Cheers,
Matt

Nap - Glad you like him. Just lovely to paint.

Matt - Aaargh!

I've now come out from behind the sofa. Big relief that you approve, but it was hard to go wrong with such an excellent sculpt -a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I'm waiting for a delivery of paint before I start the Laconian - I've run out of reds, several shades of which I was intending to use as you suggest. I've also find a shield section, which I might add to the figure if it looks right. Many thanks for your kind words.

So tempted by this bust ...thought I had it ...wrong !

As Matt says you've done a cracking job ..think the Lacinian will be great to see as well

Happy benchtime

PS ..Wish Matt would sculpt again !

Morning Peter

Another super finish and the seal of approval from the sculptor, can it get any better?

The front of the cabinet must be getting quite crowded!

I am always open to adopt any of the overflow!

Your head must be feeling better, it certainly isn't affecting your painting at the moment

A WWI bust already on the bench too.

Have a good day with the paints

Regards

Morning Steve

Very scary having the sculptor looking over your shoulder. So pleased that he likes it.

A cabinet cull is in the offing, and I've sent you a PM re the results. Still feeling pretty rough, but that's sinusitis.
