Ezellino Romano (1194-1259) was a political leader and Ghibelline ally of Frederick II of Swabia. Bold, smart and brave, his decision and will to domination resulted in acts of ruthlessness and cruelty, mostly in the descending parable subsequent death of his ally in 1250. In the later chronicles the names were given as "fierce" and "terrible "even though many of the atrocities attributed to him are the result of legends.
Lord of the "Marca Trevigiana" or to a loose area in northeast Italy who came to understand under his wide domain of the Veneto and Trentino, was the champion of the Italian Ghibellines even after the death (1250) of his ally and protector Federico II. In 1254 he was excommunicated by Pope Alexander IV, born Rinaldo Segni, the great adversary of the Ghibellines, he hoped to get rid thus a formidable obstacle to his anti-imperial policy. In 1256 Azzo VII d'Este was commissioned to conduct a "crusade" against Ezzelino, which ended with the capture and death in captivity of the same.
Dante remembers him in the Divine Comedy between submerged in a river of blood, in the group reserved for those who were violent against the next.
