Arrrgh Colin thank you - How can I possibly have missed the Duellists off the list?!!
Comes to that, anyone remember a film called 'The Draughtsman's Contract'? Fabulously beautiful imagery although I can only vaguely recall it now and can't remember the director (Wouldn't surprise me to find out it was David Lean though)

Agree with Brad about 'Firefly' and 'Serenity' (Loved the series, but the film felt a bit Hollywoody - amused me to see everyone buffed up for the film . . . )

I like Tony's list of figures available; possibly we could add to it to give a source of movie figures in miniature? (I'm rather taken with Butch and Sundance from the final scene (Andrea miniatures?)

love the list but where are the photos?

I must say I have a few of the same subject - Errol Flynn as Robin Hood is one of my favorites - I had great pleasure making and painting that figure.

Cool figure Macca

Hi
The Duellists is definitely one of my favourites
I also go with all that has been mentioned so far

If we can include TV ..... Game of Thrones and Vikings
Are holding my viewing attention at the moment
Two excellent productions

Draughtsman's Contract is a fave but not for kids and pretty hard to figure out.

Great thread Adrian.

The films that I can say have had influence on my modelling and interest in subjects are...

Zulu
A Bridge Too Far
Cross of Iron
Waterloo
(And can I mention TVs BandOfBrothers ?!)

The films that I watch pretty much once (or twice!) a year are...
Zulu
A Bridge too Far
Alien
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Blade Runner
Jaws
Saving Private Ryan

Terence Malicks Thin Red Line and Master and Commander are also a big personal favourites on a military note.

Cheers
Mat

The director was Peter Greenaway, who made a number of art-house films in the eighties, (A Zed and two Noughts, The Belly of an Architect, The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and his Lover, Drowning by Numbers). All were high concept films and heavy going.
Draughtsman's Contract was Beautiful to look at and it had an amazing musical score by Michael Nyman. I loved it then, but would probably consider it to be a bit pretentious now. I don't see the connection with models or Military subjects though. Are you mixing it up with Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon which was equally, if not more sumptuous to look at, and had a combat sequence and a duel as well, (with Rigsby! )

Speaking of Kubrick films, don't forget Full Metal Jacket, Spartacus and, best of all, Paths of Glory

Zulu
Waterloo
War & Peace the Bondarchuk Russian version
Tunes of Glory
1612
They Fought for Their Motherland
Fortress of War
Star
Field of Honour (the Benedict Arnold story)
Nicholas & Alexandra
Gettysburg
Gods & Generals
The Longest Day
Peter the Great
The reason: just because.

Of course Peter Greenaway - Thanks David (I suspect you're also correct about the nature of the film as well) I was thinking of the 'look' of the film with the costumes and little set-pieces that would work well as vignettes (Can't beat a bit of lace and ruffles);)
Don't think I've seen Barry Lyndon . . . I'm trying to picture Rigsby doing and Errol Flynn:eek:
Cheers

Here's a selection of figures and busts that were inspired by movies and TV series.

Tony

great selection of figures/images - particularly liked the LOTR figures.

A few have mentioned Waterloo as a favorite film - I am going to have to revisit it.

I'd like a good figure of Peter O'Tolle as Lawrence

Not a big list and mostly Westerns .
Stagecoach
She wore a Yellow Ribbon
The Wild Bunch
Pale Ride
They Died with Their Boots On
In Pursuit of Honour
Gettysburg , some dodgy facial hair but some great battle scenes and plenty of inspiration for dioramas

others
The Third Man , the best black and white movie ever
Tremors , best sci fi movie
The Godfather part 1
chippy

You're right Chippy... Longstreet's (Berenger (?)) beard was brutal hahaha, but I did love the movie. Followed the historical novel "Killer Angels" near line for line, especially Lee's inner monologues.

For myself, a lot of the above mentioned are on my list too, also...

Kingdom of Heaven (historically accurate or not, great fight/battle scenes. I really liked the fight scene in their camp as they left France)
Platoon
Hamburger Hill
Full Metal Jacket
Apolcolypse Now
Some great TV series...
Game of Thrones
Black Sail
Walking Dead
Band of Brothers
Generation Kill
Peaky Blinders
Penny Dreadful
And of course my favourite right now, VIKINGS.

One of my fav movies of late is the Ukrainian version of Taras Bulba. The Taras character really reminded me of my grandfather... exact same mind set.

Also a new addition to my top five favourites (queue gasp :nailbiting:) is the Duellist, which I saw for the first time in it's entirety Sunday night. Thanks Colin F for the loan... I absolutely loved it. Cool to watch the uniforms and hairstyles change through the movie. Harvey K was just one angry little man who just couldn't let it go... he needed to lose!

There are probably others but my memory is crap o_O Interesting thread BTW (y)

Colin

Colin

good list

Can I recommend a few other Viet Nam War subject movies

Odd Angry Shot
The Boys in Company C (the original version of Full Metal Jacket and in my opinion a better film)
Tunnel Rats - manages to convey the claustrophobia of the task.

Gettysburg;- great to look at, but I have to disagree about all those monologues. How the hell does anyone know what those guys were thinking at the time? A film that needed to recreate more of the battle and less of the moralising. Gods and Generals was even worse, it felt like a recruitment film for the Christian fundamentalists and the "rubicon" speech, played over the Fredericksburg river crossing, was unendurably cringe worthy.
