Ola Guys

Well the sculpting virus got me. And after a bit of pushing from Rene I decided to break out the Magic sculpt again and give a shot at sculpting a 1:35 head. This is the result so far. 1:35ish as I eyeballed dimensions from a warriors head. Made up a rough shape and pretty much went from there. No reference used just my imagination (which the masters here probably can tell right away.) Looking at the pictures I see I need to do some scraping at the left side of his face as it is a bit lopsided.
here are the pics:

I'm really curious to your feedback guys. Trying to learn whereever I can. This is completely new territory for me.

Re: First attempt at head sculpting

looks good for a fresh try Robert.

for smaller heads the same anatomics go up as well for a 1/7 head.
In the end studying in larger scale can be transposed to smaller ones.
maybe try a taller head also?

start with symetry, draw a clean cross on the face ( dividing upper half of the skull clearly from lower half) and the use of a mirror is useful. Don't think of any expression in the begining, it will appear that only very small changes in the end will provide your mimic.

using thermoclay now?

good luck,
René

Re: First attempt at head sculpting

@Rene

Thanks for the reply and the compliments. I know I probably got a better result when I had used some sort of reference or indeed a mirror for that matter but for now I'm still in the fase of discovering how intricate I can work with the material and what I have available when it comes to tools.

I probably will end up doing a larger figure somewhere in the future. But currently i stick to what I know and what I'm good at. I suck at painting large scale figures so my interest never went as far as to really buy one. Let alone make one myself.

For this head I used Magic Sculpt. I was planning to go and find some Fimo but life through a spanner in the works and had to drive to family and such. Probably next week I'm going to see if I can get some.

Re: First attempt at head sculpting

Time for a bit of an update. I declare my first head to be finished. It is not the best result but at least my first result looks human.
The pictures are sobering I have to say. You see stuff that you cannot see with the bare eye. And I see things I'm going to try to do different on the following head. I think the eyes are too big. Some details are a bit rough. And I the texture of the skin is also a bit roughy. Although that could also be attributed to the primer.

Again I'm looking really forward to any feedback.

getting better.

try to find out the right proportion for the eyes and keep measuring from an existing head.

that's why I suggest the thermoclay, more time to adjust and search, even the next days.

and if it's true I pushed you into this I feel a bit proud too (y)

Congratulations on taking the leap, doing it and posting it! That's the brass attitude it takes to the putty ball rolling. :)

I don't really have a formula for the heads I do, each one starts differently BUT the basics are there anatomically.

The most important lesson I've ever learned is: sculpt what you see, not what it is.

@ Rene
Thanks for the reply. And for my future sculpts I will try to focus a bit more on symetry and such but for me this first head was more a study in using Magic Sculp as a medium. And what the possibilities are with what I had at hand. This afternoon I invested in some fimo clay so I will start a new head and see how that stuff works for me.

@ Gordy
Thanks for the kind words and the compliments. Well with posting my stuff (how bad and horrible it might be) gives me the opportunity to rake in feedback and tips on how to do better on the next sculpt. As i said in the reply to Rene I invested in some stuff that allowed me a longer working window and I';m going to see how that works out for me,

I think it's a bloody good effort. You are not far off just need to keep visualising proportion .

Keep it going, don't give up and you are in the best place to keep improving.

Great stuff and look forward to the next updates(y)
