Forgive me artists for I have sinned......

It has been 18 months since I last posted and stroked a loaded hairy brush over a figure. July 2018 I was happily painting away then one morning I sat at the bench and decided I could not do it anymore. Within weeks I had disposed of all my scale modelling stash but, thankfully, I put most of the figures I had in a box and hid them from myself. I don’t know why this happened but, worryingly, it has happened to two other hobbies since. Although I have never stopped being a PF Supporter

Two weeks ago, I came across the box of figures and got the urge to try again. My stupidly vast collection of paint sets went in the bin but I do have a small selection of artists acrylics and oils which, to be honest, will be more than enough. If I remember rightly I had five sets of ‘flesh colour’ sets and I doubt I ever finished a figure with any of them.

My collection of finished figures survived the apocalypse and are now back in a display cabinet and I have a project on the desk, a none military bust, I am hoping to get good enough to give to my granddaughter when finished. I will explain more if I do a work in progress thread.

So good to see so many familiar names still creating art. I learnt so much from you guys in the past for which I will be forever grateful.

I know I go through similar periods and read of plenty of others doing the same so whereas I used to worry now I just enjoy the 'down-time' & max out on junk tv, climb a few walls (literally since I also enjoy bouldering) and chill then when the mood takes me again I break out the brushes again

Welcome back Graham, I have had the same experience with sculpting on several occasions, one episode lasted for almost a year.

Hi Graham. Welcome back. If it is any consolation I had a break of more than a decade, walking away from the modelling hobby completely. I found my enthusiasm again about three years ago and so far I am thoroughly enjoying it. If my figure painting starts to pall, I break out a plastic kit and that seems to keep me on track. One thing's certain - you will find a whole lot of support among the members of this amazing forum.

Thanks Phil. When I first joined PF I couldn’t paint figures to save my life but the generosity of the people on here sharing their advice and skills got me to the ‘almost acceptable’ stage of figure painting and meeting with some of them at a couple of shows was a real pleasure I hope to repeat one day.

Welcome back Graham, I think when the hobby becomes a chore it is always good to take a break, it's always there if you need it and when you need it. It is always nice to have something to go back to refreshed and raring to get going.

Thanks Keith, it wasn’t so much a lack of interest, it was as though a switch was thrown and I just could not pick up the brushes. But I will run with it as long as my daft old head will let me

I do think you should repent your sins though, you should paint a full figure whilst repeating..."Though shall not abandon figures again"
This should suffice to cleanse your figure soul

Welcome back Graham, you had been a frequent poster and I for one had noticed your absence, so it's good to hear that the mojo has returned. I think all of us go through phases like that from time to time.

Back in the summer I found that suddenly, pretty much everything I was touching modelling-wise was turning to sh!t. I was still active on here, but below the surface all was not well and I came within an ace of doing something along the lines of what you did.

I calmed down though, took a few weeks off and returned with fresh vigour ... and suddenly I was doing what I consider to be some of my best painting in a long time. I did sell off around 30 unstarted plastic kits, but that was no bad thing really as I still have a couple of lifetimes' worth (at my rate of completion anyway).

Many thanks Steve. It really is a weird feeling to suddenly not be able to do what you were doing the day before, very strange. Great to be back though and getting used to the taste of sucking the paintbrush again (acrylics only.......)
