I recently purchased the Metal Models 150mm Bust of the above.

In the book by Kessling and Horan (P33) there is a painted version with a green jacket, green epaulettes and red borders. Later in the book is another version in the traditional blue jacket, green epaulettes with red trim.

I am unable to find any references to the green version-did it actually exist.?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Keith

Hi Keith - I had the same problem trying to research this. The attached pic is from the Osprey French Foreign Legion book, so maybe check in there. I found so many uniform contradictions, I gave up and the figure ended up in the bin, sadly!!

Keith,

At the time of Camerone 1863, the jacket would be blue with green epaulettes and fringes with a red/scarlet torsade. The green Légion was short lived. It was raised in the midst of the Crimean War to try and form a second Légion Etrangère composed only of Swiss but recruitment didn't go well and this 2eme Légion was versed into the existing units. The green uniform was therefore in use for a very short period until 1859. The Metal Modèles bust represents a légionnaire in the blue uniform at the time of the Mexican expedition. Happy painting,

Pierre

Just caught up with this Keith.

One thing to remember about the Legion Estrange is they basically lived of what was left over from the main French army , wouldn't worry about precise accuracy esp in the field .

Thanks Ron I am going to paint him as a Drummer with a Grey Jacket-just to be a little different. I've already painted the Verlinden Version so wanted to avoid the jacket in Blue.

Thanks again-are you coming to Darlington next week?
