Hi guys,

My Super Sculpey Firm (Grey) arrived today, and as promised, I've immediately started work on my new bust of General Sir John Monash, in a smaller scale.

I've used a wire armature for the shoulders, and had my first attempt at baking Sculpey in the oven tonight.:D I've measured up the head and face area and carved some lines into it to help me locate the correct positions for the eyes and other facial features.;)

I've also included a pic of my new bust sitting next to my first aborted attempt, to give you some idea of the difference in size and also to give you a sense of how far I have to go yet.

Now that I have my Sculpey, nothing's going to stop me now. This stuff is great. It has the same sculpting properties as Magic Sculp, without the painful side-effects.

I'm concentrating on building up the volumes first and ensuring the proportions are correct, before I tackle any details.

good to see you back at it Tony,i think i might try this super sculpey out, does it carve well when hardened ?

Steve

Thanks guys,

I haven't carved it yet Steve. It seems quite crumbly when hardened, so I'll need to experiment with it and work out how it responds to carving and sanding.

I'm just really happy to be sculpting again and looking forward to cracking on with this bust, which will be a replica of the first one, but obviously in a smaller scale.

I'm happy for you that you can start sculpting again, looking forward to your progress on the new bust!

Marcel.

Hi Tony,
Great to see you've found an agreeable medium.

I like the work so far as a piece of '70's contempory art as it is.:D

You should have continued the original thread as a challenge to John Reid.

Anyway I look forward to your progress on this, the new General Monash.

Freshly baked bust

Dan, Marcel & Mark, thanks for your comments.

Here are the latest pics of Monash, fresh out of the oven.

I'm still building up the basic volumes of the upper body and arms, layer by layer. After I've applied a layer of Sculpey (no more than 6mm thick) I smooth it out with my sculpting tool and then bake it.

I'm slowly building out the chest and the back, squaring the shoulders and creating the hard body shape over which the uniform will go.

He looks like E.T at the moment, but I can see the basic shapes forming.

Love this Super Sculpey.....Up, Up and Away.

Hi guys,

Here's where I got to last night.

I've started on the facial details. There's no likeness of Monash yet, but it will come with patience.;)

My major focus so far has been to get the volumes and proportions right.

The neck will be resculpted when its time to join the head and shoulders together.

baking up a treat

looking good so far, keep at it.

when Kim and myself come over to Perth next we expect you to bake us something nice with your new oven skills :D

Very nice, it's always interesting watching you make monashes :D First it was one, now it will be two and soon it will be 3!!

oh yea, and since im felling more better now, i think i can finally do some more painting on my German knight :D

Hi Tony,
hope you are enjoying reaction free sculpting! poly clay is THE ticket! you can carve , sand , drill ect but wont break a blade like you might on Milly or A+B.

good start. here are some tips i picked up;

1/ to reduce the amount of build up @baking thereof, use foil to bulk out the head and body.

2/ you head has a good start but check the Eye-line; its a shade too high. the distance from the edge of the chinto base of nose is equal to the length of said nose. this is a doozy rule of thumb.
the head is 2/3 in width as is is long, so a 36 mm long head would on average be about 24mm wide.
3/ the human eye is alledgedly 24mm , so in 1/5 you could use a 5mm ball/bearing(see Jivers reaper, bearings make good eyes)

4/ triangles; from the eye-line to the mouth is one; nose to brow is two; corners of mouth to septum of nose is three and corners of mouth to chin is four( did any mention how complex this stuff can be ?!!!)

and on....

5/ in profile divide the head in half. intersect with a line from fractionaly above the nostril, 'x' marks the Ear-hole(sorry , no TREASURE!!)

6,/ The THIRDS; from chin to base of nose is no.1 and contains the mouth
from base of nose to brow is no.2 and contains the eyes
from brow to top of the hair line is no3 and contains signs of ageing!!(wrinkles!)

and i am still learning too so hope this is of use to you Tony, they are guides because proportion varies alot in the human. The ears in men continue to grow hence old chuffers with Dumbo ears( i am gonna hate that!) i have also found the on me, my mouth and ears are of similar size to my nose( ARRRGH i'm a FREAK!!!))

all the best mate, keep slinging putty and keep your old attempts --- tim :))

Hi Tim,

Mate, I'm loving this Sculpey stuff. It works just like MS, but without the pain and suffering.

Thanks for the tips on the facial proportions. I must admit I'm doing this by eye,and I know its not right at the moment. I'm not afraid to make changes if I need to.

I'll check the triangles once the bust comes out of the oven and cools down.
