wow that was quick!

corrections are a natural part of the process i have discovered. one other tip i use is that you best sculpting tool is a black marker pen;
draw all your lines and features on and circle imperfections and the like and check measurements and positions from a scale drawing with Dividers.
Dividers are a must because like the pen, you can 'draw' in to the uncured surface and ensure locations and sizes are spot on.

right , enough from me, i am off to play with my new Castilene! :))

well its going along nicely Tony. perhaps leave out detailing till the basics are in place; length of the jaw is a tad too long and uneven on the left side, mark up your lines as mentioned previously in black pen and you'll see for yourself mate.
hope this helps :/

i like it, looking forward to WASMEX next year to see this finished in the flesh

I think rather than Sculpey pie we can settle on a drink at the Sandringham Hotel (if it still exsists) or maybe the Bat 'n' Ball?......you can tell i did a fair bit of drinking around your neighbourhood when i was a younger fella

Mate, you've been out of Perth too long, both the Sandringham and the Bat N Ball have gone to the big pub in the sky. Why don't you come round to my place. I've got some very naughty Cab Sav from Margaret River which needs to be severely punished.

Funny, I grew up just up the road from Margaret River, I even picked grapes for Vasse Felix, but I've never developed a taste for wine. I'm a bourbon drinker from way back. I even plan on making the toasts at my March wedding with a nice 12 year old Canadian Club.

But I'm sure Kim will help punish the Cab Sav and pick your brains on the finer points of face painting, as she's learned as much from me as I can pass on and is fast becoming a better figure modeller than I will ever be

Nice to see the basic shape of Monash coming togethor again, i'm curious to know though, is it hard to get the shape of the smaller Monash than the big one was (like getting the proportions right and so on) or was it about the same??

When I've finished I'll let you know. At the moment I'm baking the head in the oven and using my scalpel to scrape off excess bits off the chest. Still trying hard to capture a good likeness.

Although he currently looks like a character from 'Battleship Potemkin' I reckon you're well on the way to a great bust.
I'm really keen to follow your work on this one.Cheers mate.

Thanks Mark,

I've just added the brim to his cap and he's back into the oven for another bake off.

I'll post some pics later tonight once I've cleaned up the brim and shaped and thinned it with the scalpel blade.

Hi guys,

Latest pics showing more progress on the face, brim added to cap and smoothing the upper body in preparation for adding the uniform.

Daniel, my gas bill will be huge, but its worth it.

Thanks Martin & Guy,

I'm still working on the nose (and all the other facial features) at the moment and it will get bigger as I continue to build up the volumes in the cheeks and upper jaw. I hope that when I'm finished it will be a good likeness.

Thanks for posting the portait pic Martin.

Umm.. i don't know if im correct but i think that mnost navy hats are more err... flat on the top, they wouldn't be to the bump that you have put in. i don't know if the material they used for those kinds of hats was thinner back then but now they make them so that it only slightly flexes (i know that cause i sometimes wear my dads navy chief hat which is similar looking to the one he's wearing :D). It's just my opinion.

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your comments mate, but you are a bit confused.

The hat I'm still in the process of sculpting, is an Australian Army officers' general field service hat.;) The brim of the cap was stiffened internally by a wire around the outer peak, so it would keep its firm high shape.

John Monash, at the time I am sculpting him, was General Officer Commanding (GOC) Australian Corps, A.I.F. in France 1918, would have received his hat directly from specialist military hatmakers in London, upon his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General.:D

Thanks for your opinion Daniel. I do appreciate it mate. :):)

Research and a passion for "getting it right" are why we figure modellers keep learning and getting better over the years. When I saw you at WASMEx, you really wanted to learn how to paint figures, and I like that in a 16 year old.:cool::cool: Keep asking questions mate and you'll learn more and get better yourself. I've been figure modelling since before you were born mate, and I'm still learning and trying new things and having great fun with this hobby. :D:D:D

Cheers

Alright, what i was trying to say was is that i don't think you would see his head through the hat so much as the brim of it would be more flat.. Sorry for confusing you, it's just i sometimes get a bit carried away trying to say so much stuff that i forget to write it sometimes and it stays in my head.

Here is a picture of what im trying to mean. Look at the guy at the front in the hat, it didn't have a tight fit not revealing his head through his hat. a small amout of the shape of his head. That guy is also wearing a GOC hat (the man in the forground). I don't think the picture was taken around the period of when your sculpting Monash but still..

You can do the hat the way you know how to and how you how it would sit but it's just what iv'e noticed about that the naval and army hats of this style are usually more "tougher" material at the top making it not so flexy at the top.

I hope this makes a little bit more sense and just remember, it's just what ive picked up.

Daniel

Hi guys,

I've been shaping, scraping and sanding over the past few days, trying to get the facial features right, and trying to create a good likeness.

I took the brim of his hat because it was getting in the way of shaping the eyes. Next time I'll do it in plastic card rather than sculpey.;)

Daniel, I understand the point you are making about the hat. I'll keep an eye on it mate.:)

Of course, any constructive comments and criticism is welcome.
