A basic question, on Airbrushe's!.. Please correct me if I am wrong!.. The 'Needle', size of an individual Airbrush, is purely dependent upon which type of medium, you wish to use!... but which does not detract from the finesse of the spray-line, Is this.correct? To my knowledge, the finer the 'Needle', the less options you have with what type of medium or paint you wish to use. eg, A 'Fine', needle, will not cope with a varnish or laquer.. that requires a 1mm line, however, a large Needle will cope with Varnish/Laquer, for the same definition (1mm). In short, Fine, Medium, and large needles, can create the same width of spray line, but is dependent on which type of paint or other medium you use. This is purely for my own knowledge, before selling my stuff!... so that I can advise, with honesty. Any thoughts??

Sincerely,

Mark.

Don't forget that the needle normally is pared with a paint head as well, so in the case of the brushes I use I have 0.2, 0.3 & 0.5mm head and needle combinations and the 0.2 will spray a finer line than the 0.5 with the paint at the same consistency, but the 0.5 will spray a thicker medium than the 0.2, and will also spray a finer line using the same thicker medium because the 0.2 cannot spray it at all.

If that all makes sense .

Paul

Needle/nozzle size is directly tied to how fine a line you can make - larger = wider as Paul says - as well as the viscosity of the paint you can spray. It's not directly tied to which paint types that can be sprayed, since most paints (including something that seems crude like household emulsion, or thick like oil paint) can spray well, you just need to dilute sufficiently.

eg, A 'Fine', needle, will not cope with a varnish or laquer..
Actually those would generally work better through a fine needle than a typical paint (no pigment, which is one of the things contributes to clogging).

Hi, Einion,.Thanks for the advice, .., In answer to your curiosity I am pretty much selling up what I have! and what is worth selling, (one of which is un-used), as I can no longer use, my little collection of Airbrushes, due to a health condition, affecting my hands!.. legs etc

Sorry to hear that Mark.

Thanks Carl!. I appreciate that!.... However, I can still use 'Spray-Cans', (Just). and some cheeky Masking,..,.. So I can still do some painting,... its learning how to adapt my fingers to still be able to use a brush(s), and much more thought of what 'Scale', is now achievable. Hence, moving onto Busts, as 90mm is now giving me grief! Grrrrrrr! :) So come the new year, I will be thinning back on stuff!:arghh:

Regards,

Mark

Sorry to hear that Mark. If you're still able to use a spraycan have you tried using your airbrushes just for general work (e.g. zenithal spraying)? Rather than trying to do any kind of spot airbrushing you just use them sort of like a spraygun, with the advantage of the finer atomisation. Obviously you do still have to clean them, which can be fiddly.

Thanks, Einion, Life can throw some nasty stuff at us some times!! .. The issue I have with my fingers/Hands, and pretty much the rest of me!... Is that I have purely lost all, sensation and feeling, ( Bar, Hot/Cold), and degrees of, Ataxia! (Google it, saves explaining). So things like Dual-Action, Airbrushe's, and the co-ordination of!.. is now impossible for me! More chunky things, like 'Spray-Cans',, are still managable, with both hands required!.. just to keep it pointing towards the flipping figure.,...... Fiddly, well that word give's me the 'Shiver's'.

@ Steve! Thanks,... Cant say I will be any good at them, but it's fun trying!
