Found this today and after reading it it sounds like digital sculpting could be a possibility for every individual without the need to learn complex digital sculpting programmes.
Basically if this plan takes of every high street will have a shop where you can walk in and be digitally scanned in a few minutes and then a 3d print of high quality made.
Obviously this opens the door for the possibility of for instance dressing in a ww2 uniform, adopting desired pose and you will have a figure printed up to 350mm in height.
Prices stated are about €225 for a 150mm figure, a small price if the quality of the print is of a good quality, with a little work this could be engineered as a master ready for replicating in resin/white metal.
They already have a shop open in Germany.

Wow, I have never seen this done so well.

You could also make copies of your own face and use that on figures of all scales and ages. Or would that be narcissistic...?!

There was a report on this on the BBC this morning. The reporter had his head and shoulders scanned and after a little tidying up the resultant 1:9 bust was painted.
Have to say a very impressive result. The following video shows a plaque of his head but it gives you an idea of the process.

OH hold on, it is not that easy. First notice that the scanner does not get hair. So no eyebrows. At least this type of laser scanner shown in the link doesn't and it is one of the least expensive ones you can buy. So they stopped scanning at the back of his head, closed it off and added the chain (really cool idea to display it).

This takes a while to clean up the scan data in the software and you need to know how to use it. I don't want to down play the technology as this is where it is heading, but it is not a simple button click with todays technology (maybe someday.) I have been working in this field for the last 7 years and our software can do some amazing things but it still takes some time to get what you want.

Also to scan a person you would not use that type of scanner as it is too sensitive to how much the human body moves while you breathe. I had a person lay down on the floor and I tried to scan their head area. At the end of the scanning session the person had 6 earlobes and 6 nostrils. I was shocked at how much the human face moves when you breathe. I had a lot of work to do to get the face to look right.

I was able to scan a person with a different type of scanner, I had to put a bunch of special stickers on the face to help track the movement. This type of scanner is one of the lowest in cost on the market. (www.creaform3d.com). To scan a whole person a lot of scans will need to be taken at all sorts of different angles to acquire all the details especially if there is equipment on the person ( think fully loaded soldier). HOLD THAT POSE, STOP MOVING. NO YOU MAY NOT GO TO THE BATHROOM!!!!!!

Now are you ready for this!!! The phone industry is headed in this direction, you will be able to scan a 3d object with your phone using the same technology as what is in a DLP projector. There was a major press release from Hewlitt Packer (HP) ramping up production to be able to meet the demand of the phone market. So all of this is coming soon for everybody to use with their personal printers. It's not quite there yet.

Also think about this. Just because there are companies that make and manufacture oil paints that everyone can buy and use does not make them a "Rembrandt," painter when they use them. This will never replace the amazing figures that are sculpted by hand and digitally sculpted.

I do not work for any of the companies listed above. I have to use just about every piece of scanning hardware there is on the market. I just listed these as they just popped in my head. blah, blah, blah,...... Now back to painting figures.
