Having long ago lost any hope of seeing a decent figure or bust of a Belgian subject from one of the great sculptors, I do however still hope to see the talented hands of a sculptor like Offo or the guys behind the Young or Life Miniatures range turned to a favorite subject of mine, the Red Army and in particular some of its heroines. As the Pavlichenko bust by Ken Farrar turns out to be a one-off, there is certainly still some work to do. What about a Roza Shanina, a Natalya Meklin or one of the unknown, unsung females like the one in this picture:

Oh yes I understand they might not be sellers as the umpteenth Panzer officer, but before you start throwing flak or invective guys, beware, one day you might have to explain your grandchildren against whom all those proud Germans on your shelves were actually fighting! For lack of opponents you might run out of heroes!
Just a few thoughts:whistle:

It may interest you to know that Ken Farrar did a bust of Natalya Meklin
as well as a 120mm fig of Roza Shanina which he may possibly still have some left.
Cheers
Tom

Hello Tom,
Thanks for the info, I have Ken's Natalya and his Roza Shanina figure is still waiting in my grey army with a sniper's patience. But some new busts of these heroines wouldn't hurt would they? After all there is more than one Napoleon or Murat on the market, not to speak of the most represented WW2 army which I wouldn't dare to name!;) IMO Lyudmila Pavlichenko is Ken's best work but alas a one-off and it would be nice to have someone like Pavol "Offo" make a trio or two of these busts. And what about some busts of Soviet commanders, Zhukov, Chuikov, Koniev, Rokossovsky to name a few? Given the size of the Red Army in WW2 isn't it amazing how few quality representations there are in figures and busts? Alexandros is about to release a Roza Shanina bust any day now, I hope it will brighten the festive season in beleaguered little Belgium!
All the best,
Piet

I would really love a set of Soviet Commanders Piet. At present I am working on an old Parade models bust of Zhukov but want to change it from General of the Army to one of his other commands. Not sure which one yet.Roza would brighten any season pal, she was beautiful young woman. Certainly one for my collection.

I wholeheartedly agree. I would like to see some of the Belgian/Dutch troops at Waterloo sculpted. But on the subject of Soviet subjects I have always thought the female pilots of WWII would be an ideal subject, although I would like to see figures as full sculpts, maybe in 75mm?

Soviet female pilots in 75mm would be very nice of course too. As it is, the best bust of a female pilot to date is the now hard to find Lilya Litvyak from Garage Box:
