Hints And Tips Needed For Douglas Motorcycle

I spent about 4 hours now on building the Tommy's War Douglas Motorcycle.
But I last all my curses this afternoon. Parts broken off, glue is holding very bad, glued parts get off again etc. etc.
This casting is so delicate that breaking parts is almost a must.
Who build this Motorcycle and can give me some tips and hints.
Otherwise I think I gonna get crazy.

I drilled down the frame with a micro drill, and used fusewire to dowel it.

I've seen this, but now I see that I missed the building instructions. I cut off some things that I needed for the buildupp.
Anyway, thanks for the tips, and the challenge is there.

Oh, where there instructions with the box???? No, only drawings. The intstruction on the web is very informative, and it is good to see that i build in the engine the same as the picture. The instruction pictures let us see there is another way to build it in.
The web is more informative then the drawings in the box.
What drill size did you use????? Whas there no rupture of the very small "tube's " ???

No fusewire in the Netherlands.
We use automatic's. Search the whole net into the netherlands, and there is nothing here.

0.3mm Marc. You could strip some electrical flex, and use some strands out of that.

That would be fun. Drilled yesterday with a small handdrill (0,3) and the moment the drill was in the piece some part broke off and get airborn. I never seen it back. It's great fun building this Douglas (not)
I hope the best of it, gonna try the flex, thanks for the tip.

Sorry you're finding it frustrating, it does have some very fine parts, but I'm always happy to replace anything that breaks

hi Marc,

Having built the Bike for the Box art I can honestly say with some patience you will end up with a stunning kit.
For me all I used was super glue for building the kit, I found it went together very well although you do need caution with the delicate items.
Keep at it you will be rewarded for your efforts

As for Darren offering to replace any broken parts you cannot say fairer than that.

It's a great offer from Darren.
But broken parts could be glued and the airborn piece is gone. I could fix it with a spare part.
It give's me nightmare's but indeed, at the end I will end up with a awesome Douglas that whas years in my mind to build.
Darren made it possible.
I got to be patient and very, very carefully.

Hi Marc, Just catching up on this ... I built the hard half of the box art bike for Darren eh Steve

Before super gluing parts, I degrease all resin parts with liquid lighter fluid and a cut down brush, just scrubbing gently with the fluid. Once you blow on it, it is dry ready for gluing. I also find Loctite super glue the strongest bond and if its an old bottle Id get a new one as moisture in the air over time can ruin the glue if stored incorrectly. If you do get a new one store in an air tight ziplock bag with a few bags of silica to draw the moisture and also keep it in the dark the cooler the better really .... this will prolong the life of super glue big time.

I didnt drill out the tubing as you will notice there is a half round notched out to the mating surface of the frame tubing making a good locating point. Any warp then when it is together due to the ultra fine framework you can do as Steve did and very gently warm the resin and re align.

Any area thats a pain just post it here Marc as a few of us here have built the kit, and once together it looks sexyyyy !

Good of Darren to get on it straight away ... I wish other manufacturers where so up on customer service !

I don't smoke (stopped 10 years ago) so I have to get some lighterfluid.
That could be the course........not clean enough.

Isopropyl alcohol will do the same job mate.
Injection prep swabs do the trick.
I'm sure you can lose some from work.

Very True mate and I must say you did an excellent job of it, good tip regarding the use of lighter fluid to clean the resin prior to glueing, also the storing of the glue, that's probably the reason my older glue does not adhere well when using it on resin parts, will keep that in mind for the future.
