Hi Ken, there are many ways to approach most colour mixes, one of the simplest here is: yellow, red, black and white. If you have any yellow earths you might find it easier starting with the closest and making the minor necessary adjustments but mixing from scratch can make mixing the shadow colours much easier and if you use cad yellow and red with Titanium White you'll get a nice opaque mix regardless of which black you have, although Mars Black would be ideal if you have it.

Just another thought here...

I recently discovered Unbleached Titanium which is a light beige. This is a pretty good start for khaki or sand colors. You could add a bit of mars yellow / yellow ochre pigment and see where that takes you.

Let us know what works for you. I like to file this stuff away for future needs!

As Einion said, there are dozens (?) of variations of kahki, even for to your specific request for a yellow kahki.

At the risk of sounding unhelpful, I'd recommend sitting down with tubes of various earth tones and just mixing colors to see what you come up with. I often do this, playing with colors with no intent of actually painting anything, just to see what I can discover.

As you mix kahki tones, I'd only suggest that you keep the mixes simple -- no more than maybe three colors per "base" -- and trying blacks and umbers for the shading color.

If you need a more specific answer, I can post something tonight when I'm at home.

Thanks everybody. I found a formula which I had written down calling for yellow ochre + some burnt sienna + naples yellow light. I guess it will be an excercise in experimntation. Thanks all. ;)
