Yeah......To us all who think their shit don't stink and our work is the end all that ends all;....gander at the beautiful and meaningful bronzes previously shown. And you "WILL" see how truly small we are.
And the surface has been barely scratched.....There are many more........May God bless us all........Wayne

Great idea for a thread.

These are a number of angles of the Canadian National War Memorial in Ottawa, Canada. I love the sculpture... it's a gorgeous vignette. The tomb of the Canadian Unknown Soldier is at the base of the monument. Sadly, the monument was the site of a tragic attack... but I won't get into that here

My favourite piece is the cenotaph in front of Old City Hall in Toronto. I went there every year for Remembrance Day ceremonies until I started working at Sunnybrook Hospital/Veteran's Residence where we have our own cenotaph and ceremony. Every time I see this monument, for some reason, I choke up.

Toronto is a conglomeration of 52 towns and villages and each one had it's own monument. There are umpteen monuments in the city, tucked away in the oddest places, covering conflicts from the War of 1812 to present. I'll post them as I find them.

To be honest Paul I can't think of a RHF memorial as such but there is the memorials to the HLI in Kelvingrove Park Glasgow. Unusual in that the viewing angle shows the rear of the figure, the figure itself looks across the River Kelvin to Glasgow University.
The second regiment that formed the RHF was the Royal Scots Fusiliers whose main memorial is in Ayr.

Faboulouso Del the RSF one is the one I was thinking of it always reminded me of the tommy from Phoenix models years ago, a proper NW Europe infantryman.
Thank you
Paul

Hi Paul.
As your title say's in-spiration.War memorials do not really inspire me,but here is something that inspire's me.
This is King Charles Tower on the wall's of Chester. The reason it inspire's me is that in the early 70's my dad broke his back, and he used to sit with me making models and doing woodwork we made a wooden fort(hobbies plan).my dad was a member of the Grosvenor Museum(Chester)and he was asked to make a copy of the shield on the tower, which he did and also painted it,this was then placed on the tower and the original put into storage in the museum. So every time I see this tower it reminds me of my very early years with my dad.
Ralph.

Wonderful thread!

Four photos of the American Merchant Marine Memorial in San Pedro, CA.

Four photos of the South African War Memorial in Bendigo.

One photo of a relief of an artillery column. Another of a Canadian artillery driver. Three figures which became part of the Canadian War Memorial. All by Elsie March.

A naval vignette, a frightened boy and girl, and fixed bayonets. All by John William Gascombe.

Enjoy!

All the best,
Dan

Indeed! However church based memorials while important are not really public! There are a few round here in the villages and an amazing roll call in middlesbrough by the dorman long museum...

I'm not struck on the diorama of the wwi bombardment! I feel it lacks gravitas whereas the new memorial down in town is great!

I'll try to get some pictures over the weekend!

:)
