My contribution (from Greece) to this fine thread started by Paul (Thank you), part of Historic memory.
From what Ralph posted above, if those mislead persons who vandalized memorials knew what memorials represent, then what they ought to do is just stay silent. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" a phrase from George Santayana for those with "short" memory!
First picture is the tomb of the unknown soldier (under the parliament), the words on the wall are the places that Greeks fought and died for freedom.
The guards are the "Evzones" from the presidential guard and stay 24 hours a day every day of the year guarding
the tomb!

This is the statue of King Leonidas of Sparta at Thermopylae in memory of the battle at 480 bc.

there are many more but i dont want to take advantage of the space!
Thanks again Paul for the opportunity and every member who shared and will share his country's memorials.
Dimitris.

My two favourite WWI memorials......Allward's haunting "Canada Bereft" sculpture that forms the focus of the Vimy Memorial and the Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont Hamel on the Somme, where the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was destroyed on the First Day of the battle. The moose is shown calling out for the island's fallen sons.

Perseas Fabulous thank you That's one I would love to see for real>

Colin I was there in Newfoundland Park with Housecarl barely 2 years agonand I was going to post these pics if no-one else did
images

it had a profound effect on me being there.
It is a very moving place with a lot of monuments

Thank you both for for sharing these

And possibly the most important one....the book burning memorial at Babelplatz Berlin, where the Nazis torched decadent books, consisting of a subterranean library with empty booksheleves and a bronze plaque with a prescient 1820 quote from Heinrich Heine...."That was only a prelude, there where they burn books, they burn in the end people."

I know Paul. When my oldest son and I were there in '06 he walked across the square whistling the book burning tune from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He stopped when I noted that the tune was a real Nazi march and that I didn't have enough Euros on me to bail him out of jail :)

Its the monument I always think of when the issue of censorship comes up.

Cheers

Colin

almost Woops moment then !

Ref Vimy Ridge, I watched a you tube video about a piper who took his grandfathers pipes back an played flowers of the forest on the memorial.
His grandfather was one who played the regiment into battle and survived.
I will find it and forward it to you
Regards Paul

Mark lovely dramatic orkney sky,
Fascinated by a memorial with Italien 1943 on it and star of David on the guard chains, any ideas at all? I know it's a few years ago mind !

Middlesborough memorial's proper gritty innit?
It r eflects well no pun on the tough reputaion of the Yorkshire regiment and the 50th div of D-day fame.

Wonderful stuff
Thanks for sharing

The Italian Memorial is part of the Italian Chapel, after the sinking of the Royal Oak Churchill ordered all the little channels into Scapa Flow blocked...

The Churchill Barriers were built by Italian POWs.

There is a converted nissan hut that the POWs made into a church, amazing work and all with stuff they scrounged basically.

See here for a wiki entry :)

'Albert's Park', entrance! (Middlesbrough). Wow, this has changed massively! since I lived there. Thanks for this. A blast from the past! .;)

Regards,

Mark

Paul, it is not the star of David on the Italian memorial but the star of the House of Savoy, the Italian king. They are still worn by Italian troops today as 'collar dogs'
