I will be starting on the Verlinden Mamluk bust.
I have looked for information on the Mamluk's
on the internet... can't find much. I would also
like to find some color info. on their clothing.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I can find this.

Thank you
Dee

Hi, Dee!

Check this link to a good resource to buy. If you don't want to spend the $$, I'll look at my Osprey's at home and see if I have this one. I don't think I do, but if I have it, or one like it, you can certainly borrow it.

Incidentally, if you like Mamluk's ( and who doesn't-they are natural painter's figures aren't they) you should see one of the best mamluk figures out there that was sculpted by Mike Good a few years back and released by Ft. Duquesne (now out of business). If you'd like, I'll bring mine to the next meeting. It's 75mm so smaller than your 120's, but very nicely done. In fact, if you can find one, let me know because I'd like to paint that kit again someday!

Good luck,

Matt S

Hey Matt

I was going to email you when I got home tonite.. to ask you.
Also.. I do want to see your.. bring it next month to the meeting.
Terry told me you had one as did Dave.. so i want all 3 of you
to bring yours in.

Let me check out that book.. tks.
And yes if you have some reference I would like to see it.
I can follow the box art.. but wanted to learn more about them
and see if I may choose different colors than the box art. I like
the box art.. but want to explore my options...

I am kind of ahead of myself.. I have one figure before that
i am just now putting together... its of course a Napoleonic..
and this time I am tackling white. Red was hard enough for
me with LaSalle... but now I am going to try whilte.

Then the Mamluk.. but want to do some homework so I can
roll right into that bust.

Thanks..
Dee

No problem, Dee. I'll bring my Mamluk figure to the next meeting. It was done back in my old oil painting days!

Good luck with the white. My advice is to use an offwhite, black and a 3rd color to warm up or cool down the base white color. I would recommend that 3rd color be burnt umber or maybe a touch of dark blue. Start with a light grey base color and save your pure titanium white for final highlights once your wet on wet blending dries. This should help you get more contrast or difference between your color values. I'll often use varying color mixes for white on the same figure for different garments that are supposed to be white. It breaks up some of the monotony of all that whiteness. Try using a brown for one garments third color and a blue for the other.

Marcello,
Wonderful.. pictures.. thank you so verymuch and I may just take you
up on your offer for some help...
Thank you so very much.... those are great..

Matt..
I was going to ask you about white.. I remember when I first joined
the club Terry did a Mamluk and I remember you advising him on his
white... but really didn't know enough to know what you guys were
talking about...
Thanks for the advise on white... I will go with your suggestion.
Hope to get some of this Chasseur painted by the next meeting
so I can show you and get your opinion.

Thanks again to both of you..
Dee

Ulrich,
OH MY GAWD.... these pictures are wonderful also...
Thank you so very much... this will be a great addition
to Marcello's pictures he posted for me.
This is a great start.
I feel better already about this project.

I had no idea how colorful the Mamluke's were.
Matt was right... they are a great subject to paint.

Thank you again so very much.
