Hi folks,
I'm working now the H&V Corporal, 19th Indiana Infantry Regiment (75mm) and did a research on the Hardee hat. The figure is depicting the hat pinned up on the right side which I thought is the wrong side. Looking at pictures depicting IB infantry soldiers I noticed that the hat was pinned on both sides. Majority are pinned up on the left side but there are soldiers wearing the hat pinned up on the right side. Looking at the pictures, it seems that both situations are correct. Do you have additional references which can clarify this aspect?

I extended my research on the haversack trying to find out if the IB regiments numbers were painted/printed on it. I couldn't find any credible references. I would appreciated all the help that I can get.

I noticed that the figure has 2 bottoms sculpted on the collar. In the uniform pictures I didn't observed any bottoms on the collar, so those 2 will be removed. In rest, the figure is very, very well sculpted.

Thanks a lot for your help!
Cheers,
Zeno

Thank you so much Roger for the links. (y)
Now is clear. The August 1861 Revised Regulations of the US Army changed the side of the Dress Hat looped for Infantry from the left to the right. I looked to the document attached to the first link and is very clear. Now, the figure from H&V is placed in 1862 so the hat sculpture is correct.

The only question left is about painting/printing regimental numbers on the haversack. I would appreciate a lot your input. I couldn't find any references on this issue.
Thanks a lot!
Cheers,
Zeno :)

This is very timely. Zeno and I bought this same figure at the same show this summer. I have this guy prepped and primed and started the fleshtones but hadn't yet started to do any uniform research yet. Hadn't noticed the button issue yet.

I'll be watching this thread closely... Group research is always more fruitful than trying to find stuff on your own... unless you get 32 different answers to the same question

The only IB plate that I found.
According to this plate, no markings on the knapsack.
Looking forward for your advise.
Please note the hat pinning side. Is not according to the August, 1861 regulations and the plate is depicting the IB at Gettysburg in 1863.
Cheers,
Zeno

According to the 1861 regulation, at page 488, paragraph 1576:
"Knapsack - of painted canvas, according to pattern now issued by Quartermaster's Department; the great-coat, when carried, to be neatly folded, not rolled, and covered by the outer flap of the knapsack."
Not a word about any markings. Maybe those markings were regulated at the brigade or regiment level. I don't have a clue how it worked. Just a train of thoughts.
Really need your help on this.
Cheers.

Thanks a lot Roger!(y)
Where ever I looked, I couldn't find any markings on the IB knapsacks. So, I guess, I'm ready to go. It will take a while till I'll get to the knapsack. In the mean time, if you guys find something on this topic, please let me know.
Thanks a lot!
Cheers,
Zeno :)
