Hi Guys,

Been trawling through my magazine collection particularly Historical Miniatures from the U.S.(now sadly no more) and was reading an article by Doug Cohen in which he mentions using Isopropal and water as a thinner has anyone used this stuff .

Appreciate any thoughts, comments or suggestions as to how it reacts and how it affects anything ....Mr Cohen's results look great

In the same article his palette is a block of wood covered in 2" masking tape ...net idea that as well

Cheers for any responses

Thanks guys for the details

So that's isopropal , distiller water and a retarder , Nap

Quite a good tutorial by a Brit on making your own thinner mixture of water, isopropyl and retarder:

Incidentally Isopropyl - aka denatured or 'rubbing alcohol' - seems to be more readily known as IPA.
You can buy it in chemists but get better value on Amazon

A lot of the pros in the movie business seem to like using it. There's a great tutorial by Jordu Schell on the Stan Winston site showing his techniques with it - worth subscribing to.

What happens if you drink it? Hands up all those who've washed out brushes in the coffee cup and drunk from the thinners/brush cleaner.

It's the same stuff that is used in windshield cleaner for cars. The blue color doesn't effect the paint. And it cost less then the original isopropyl alcohol.

Hmmm i'm a car groomer, i wonder if it is the same stuff that I use to clean windows with, might just have to check it out. Certainly won't run out as I have 20 litres.
