haha, on a complety different subject, i found a figure of a german knight (Made by mini art) and i put most of him togethor. I just need for the glue and putty to complety dry. Tomorrow i will do more on my two figures. My goal is to hopefully get these done by WASMEx but if i don't, i can always just enter a tank ;)

Oh yea, ive been following how your bust is going and i haven't seen it in a couple days, have you fixed Moanash from his "surgery" yet?

No, he's still in pieces at the moment. I'm taking my time with this bust and don't want to rush, as I'm still learning the ropes; plus I have some important family matters to attend to.

I'll bring the bust to WASMEx and I'd be happy to show you how its progressing.

Cheers

Alright well, i got the face out my miniart kit and last night i primered it, this morning i put the medium fleshtone on and just now i was playing around with the shadows and highlights. To me he looks a little to yellow, any suggestions??

Oh yea, the darker bits are in Vallejo flat black and the highlights are in sunny skintone.

Alright.. i just updated on my last post of the last 2 things i did.. I added a Light creamish colour to my sunny skin tone and put it on a few spots lights.

I painted the ouside bit in Vallejos red because (if im right) hes wearing a blacalava (Or something similar) i didn't do it all around because you won't see it and it doesn't make it 100% clear where it would go.

I'm just doing this as practice but im stuck making this look a bit more realistic.. To me this at the moment looks a bit to yellowish for my liking. Oh yea.. any sorry that the images don't really show the highlights and shadows..

Ok.. i added some more shadows to the figure and a little more high lights.. I also added a slight touch of red to the lips then gave it a very light wash of flat brown to make it seem more realistic.. The one other thing i did was is change the "balavalava" to be black insetad of red. The skin tone itself still looks really yewllow and it doesn't look 100% natural.. Any reccomendations?

Hi Daniel,

The eyes are the focus of the face, and it pays to spend a bit of time on them. Once upon a time, I used to put a black blob of paint where i thought the eye would be, and was happy to say "I've painted the eyes".

You've got some talent mate, so why not make the eyes more realistic by reducing the size of the pupil and eliminate the wide open look.

Have a look at your own eyes in the mirror, and use them as reference.

Eyes are shaped like ovals not circles, with the lower eye lid running in an almost straight line across the bottom of the pupil.

Try to make both eyes look the same if you can. From your photos it looks like one eye is much bigger than the other.

These are just suggestions, but I think with time, patience and practice, you'll see massive improvements in your painting over a short period of time.

The one thing that you clearly have loads of is enthusiasm, and that's the most important ingredient. Without enthusiasm, even the best painters in the world would produce crap figures.

Don't be disheartened if you can't paint like a master in a couple of weeks, it takes years of practice to become that good.

I've been modelling for over 30 years and I still feel frustrated that I'll never be as talented and skillful as some of the guys here on Planet Figure.

The main thing Daniel is don't give up. Keep having a go and you'll become as good as you can be, and that's all we can hope to be.

Cheers

It's coming along nicely Danny

If you want to practice your face painting I'm sure i have several 54mm and 90mm heads floating around in the spares box you can have to practice on rather than using a full figure as a test case......

.....If you want them I'll send them your way via Tony (if thats ok with you Tony)

Thanks for the help.. i asked my mum to look at the figure and she also noticed the eyes.. im thinking that im ganna' repaint the right eye (the right eye in the image that is) the slight cream colour (for that i used citadels Bleached Bone). Is there anyway to maybe make it more possible to paint the iris in a more circular fashion?

Daniel

Alirhgt.. this feels like im bringing this back from the dead :/ Anyways, i have been playing around with painting metals, so far im happy with them but i just want some feed back

I did the base coat with citadels boltgun metal then i used used Citadels radab black was (it's part of citadels newish washes and i used it because i couldn't be bothered mixing inks and it was at about the consistency i wanted it at anyway) used for the shaows and dirtyness then i used vallejos alcohol based "silver" for the brighter bits.

One other thing i forgot to mention is that the face is looking a bit better now since Tony showed me how to do faces during WASMEx. I have to say thanks to you now because i realised i actually forgot to ;)

Alright, i've tried doing leather a bit and shading him but this is the bit where i haven't got any further with a figure. I personally don't think my leather look realistic enough so would anybody have any tips for paint?

G'day Daniel,

Firstly well done mate, you're really making good progress with this figure.

As I explained to you at WASMEx, the secret to achieving realistic results with your paint brush is the shadowing and highlighting, which tries to simulate the fall of light on a figure. I see you've done some shadowing on the orange surcoat, but I can't see any highlights yet. Don't forget the dark shadow under the metal plate sitting on his shoulders.

The leather looks fine, but once again, you should outline the shape of the belt strap by washing a dilute mix of dark shadow colour along the length of the belt (on the top and bottom sides) to help make it more 3-D.

Keep up the good work Daniel and please bring this figure along to our next club meeting so we can work on it some more.

Alright, so with the highlights it will be the olour i used before and just add a lighter coliur (like a yellow or something like that?) As for the plate, i already added a slight shadow but haven't got around to putting a second one on him.

I hope to see you at the next meeting just so i can show yous my figure and get some feedback ;)

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Highlights are usually the base colour with a lighter colour (usually white or off-white) added. In some cases yellow will completely change the colour (for example when mixed with green or blue), so stay with a neutral colour to mix with your base coat to create your highlight mix.

The "upper highlights, can be almost pure white, but go easy on those. Too much and you'll overdo the effect.

As you can see from the works here on pF, highlighting and shadowing are a challenge for even the very best figure painters, so don't be discouraged if you don't get it right first time.

Patience and practice are the keys to successful figure painting.

Thanks Tony ;) It's just ganna' be a bit of a hassle to get the right colour again since i needed to customly mix it up. Anyway, as some might say "it's all part of the fun"

Daniel

Well today i gave my German knight a bit of a rest and found a spare figure on a piece of sprew my dad was ganna' throw out from one of his kits. All i needed to do was is cut him out, glue his arms on then putty, sand and quickly prime him with a olive green.

This was just playing around with what colour I would start using to get more "realistic' skin tones scince i felt that the medium skintone was a bit errr... Yellowish. Overall though it was good practice doing his face and just for the hell of it i think i might even finish him.
