These last few days I've been painting a bust for a local competition.

It's a bust from Lampião, a folkloric character, he was the leader of a bandit group from the early 1900s in Brazil. You can read about him here, if you're interested
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lampião

I started byblocking the
face base color and starting the eyes

After a bit of refining I got the eyes mostly finished and blocked the main face volumes by stippling some lighter colors

I kept refining some volumes and adding color variation. I played around some oils to add visual interest to the skin, as well as because oils are new to me so I need to use it as much as possible

You can see i blocked a brown tone for the leather hat. I'll stop messing with the skin for now, going back after most of the mini is finished if I need to touch up.

I'll post later the work done on the blue shirt and the other leather pieces on the model.

Cheers!

Hi Lucas

Great to see you posting , a very interesting subject and a nicely sculpted piece as well as a good start so far

Look forward to seeing more especially the headwear

Happy benchtime

After working on the face and blocking the hat I decided to play with the shirt. I start by airbrushing a de saturated blue tone:
IMG_20210806_085622.jpg

I then block some rough lights and shadows, preparing for the texture work:
IMG_20210806_121917.jpg

Now for painting thin lines with a slightly lighter blue to create the cloth texture effect
IMG_20210806_191224.jpgIMG_20210806_191234_1.jpgIMG_20210806_191245.jpg

I also started stippling a bit of color on the hat, that way I can work the textures and modulate the lights and shadows

IMG_20210806_191320.jpg

Now to bring everything together I glazed the blue midtone with my airbrush, focusing on the midtones and shadows and, with a brush, added some oranges to the shadows to give it depth and ambiance

I'll post a how I've been painting the leather parts later today!
Cheers!

is ther an asier way to order it

I can't think of an easier way of getting the model other than paying online and downloading it. I don't know what you're looking for here, maybe you could get a friend to purchase it for you and copy the file into an USB drive?

i did al that but it is so cheap, how about the shipment to belgium

Oh, the model is 3d printed, there are no physical casts! The sculptor creates a computer file (.stl) that can be used in a 3d printer to print the model!
I recommend looking for someone with a resin 3d printer near you in Belgium and asking them to print the file for you!
I bet you could find people if you asked in hobby stores or facebook groups. Most universities also have 3d printers, you might even find some if you ask in dental clinics.

After the blue shirt was mostly done I started tackling the leather bits. My first step was blocking a piece of leather, modulating light and shadow with stippling and seeing how the colors would work:

I like the way it's looking, so now to prep the rest of the leather parts:
lampx02.jpg lampx03.jpg

I added more textures and also blocked the kerchief with a dark, opaque red:
lampx04.jpg

I went at it stippling more colors to all leather bits and blocked some rough lights and shadows for the kerchief. Here's some pictures showing all texture work done so far:

I'll use some acrylic inks and oils to bring everything together and have smoother finishes that (hopefully) read like different colors and types of leather.

Cheers!

Quick update because I didn't get much painting time this weekend.
I had time to do a few things:
- Apply oil washes to the leather parts to make the textures smooth, yet visible.
- Block the sculpted details on the leather straps with their colors - red, yellow and blue
- Start painting the red kerchief with oils

The oil washes were quite fun and I'm really happy with some areas (like the front area of the hat), though some others need more work (the leather bands with yellow flowers)
Blocking the sculpted details was straightforward, i'll have to paint lights and shadows later.
The red kerchief/scarf thing was a pain. It was my first time using oils in a heavier application, i kept mixing the red tones on the spot without using a good reference image. I'll have to refine it later and i'll certainly have a good reference in my face at all times, there's just no need for me to make the process harder.
I took some pictures during these processes, all of them quick photos using default settings to speed things up.

During this week I want to fix the red cloth, add depth to the details, work more on the leather parts. Hopefully i'll have the chest area done so I can glue both hands and the weapon. I have until the end of the month to finish the piece and while I did get quite far i'm starting to get worried with time. Let's see!

Cheers

A small and not-so-interesting update.
I started planning the backdrop and plinth. First using a cotton-swab pot, later with a larger wood block:
lampz01.jpglampz02.jpglampz03.jpg

Later i used photopea to sketch what i had in mind for the background - a dry land with clear skies and the traditional Ypê tree (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handroanthus):
lampz04.pnglampz05.jpg

After messing a bit with saturation and value, i tried painting a test backdrop using some random piece of plastic I had at home:
lampz06.jpg lampz0601.jpg
Yeah. Trees are hard. I'll have to practice more before doing the real thing.

After that I started blocking the metallic bits and glued the arms:

I'm on the last steps on this project, hopefully i'll be able to finish it in time.
Cheers!

Thanks folks! Over the weekend I started painting the gun, the glasses and did the stubble on the face.
I'm now at the last stretch, I just need to finish some overall details, like the red cloth, some metal work, etc.
The wood was done by glazing burnt umber and burnt umber + Pyrrole red inks over the base, leaving some stains to sell the effect of old wood. The stubble was just a de saturated blue tone glazed over the skin.

After some black lining that's how it's looking right now:
