A Fixture
New project that I’ve been thinking about for a while on the back of the Roman Scene depicting the last stand of the IX legion at Camulodonum, 1st century Roman Britain.
After the Iceni routed the Roman army and sacked several cities including London, they were emboldened in teaching the hated Roman invaders a lesson. The Iceni chased fleeing Romans beyond their East of England homeland, gathering warriors in an attempt to finally defeat the Romans and to kick them out of Britain.
The culmination of that 1st century Britain conflict, ended in defeat for the Iceni led by Boudicca at the battle of Watling Street. On paper the Britain’s should have easily defeated the Roman legions, they outnumbered their foe 10:1. However the Iceni warriors were untrained in military strategy used so effectively that day by the Roman army. Little is known of the location of the battle, some speculate it to be near Mancetter Warwickshire, others nearer London or even nearer to modern Nottingham. Various sites fit the geography of the large battle as described by Tacitus and other writers of Roman 1st century history.
The Roman description of what happened to Queen Boudicca at Watling Street describe her as having fled the battle in defeat, to either die of wounds or by poison. A one sided and classical Roman way of describing a feeble female leader verses a male dominated Roman Army. I’ve read various accounts and looked into Celtic and Iceni culture from what little exists. I can’t see that a Queen who amassed thousands of warriors of various British peoples, enraged by what the Romans did to her and the daughters being a timid character. As Queen she defeated several large Roman armies and cities; would an enraged strong female leader run from battle in disgrace or take poison as the easy way out?
With the above in mind, I’m depicting Boudicca and her daughters in a final last stand. Atop their wrecked chariot having plowed into the Roman lines, trying to break out from the encircled Iceni at the battle of Watling Street. The scene showing defiant and heroic leadership. That’s how I see Boudicca.
Using items from the spares box left over from the Miniart 1/16 Roman legionary figures incorporated into the scene. I will also be sculpting three female figures (my first, gulp.) and heavily reconfiguring the body of a dead Roman legionary from the MiniArt kit. With many scratch built items including the chariot, weapons etc. A bit of a challenge, but as they say nothing ventured nothing gained.
The scene is at a very early stage of development, having only worked on it over this last weekend.
