Well then here goes the painting, I'll try to use some of what I've learnt reading threads on here, can't guarantee I'll get it right but it's a start.

The whole figure was primed with Halfords bog standard grey primer, I used to use the stuff from the pound shop but my mobility has deteriorated and it's easier to drive to Halford than walk into the town centre. Then 3 thin coats of an off white, in this case Vallejo Game Bone White, which ever it's easiest to put my hand on first

First the face,

Early days, colour mapped the face before starting to build up the skin tones, he looks a little washed out, I think I need to adjust my lighting, bright enough to paint too bright to photograph.

Next up I mapped shade into the primed figure, pretty odd colour scheme.

I have used green to shade red since my oil painting days, on the colour wheel it is the complimentary colour, it will take a lot of layering to start looking anything like. That is one lesson I have re-learnt, patience, I used to rush things far too much. The purple on what will be a blue jacket is another hang over from oil painting, the premise that there is purple in every shadow, also over painted with blue it will be richer than using black.

IMG_2332.JPG

Adjusted lights, still the face is a little washed out but I don't want to put any more colour in it, it might look better in a photo but the figure would start to resemble Coco the clown! Hopefully you can see where the purple has added more intensity/saturation into the blue shade, this is only two thin washes of Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue, also the mammoth job I've set myself on the red trousers.

Any and all comments, hints, tips or down right insults are warmly welcomed.

Cheers Simon

Hi Simon/Briggsy ..not sure what to call you !

Good updates there , no insults from me on this , it's good to see how you approach painting , adding the purple works ..not tried that but will do I think on next bust

Look forward to seeing the red trousers

Have FUN @ the bench

Yeah I answer to pretty much anything, thick skinned Yorkshire man but for the sake of ease I guess Simon will do.

The purple idea came from a long forgotten tube of oils, Senelier (probably spelt that wrong) produce a fantastic colour called 'Neutral Tint', basically a very dark, almost black, purple that was quite translucent but could be built up in layers over time. Pretty much shadow in a tube, mine is probably a solid lump in a tube by now.

Excellent progress here, although I'd appreciate some larger pics as it's hard to see the paint job in those small pics (old eyes here......;))

Nigel, many thanks, I thought the pictures would enlarge as they are thumbnails, next time they'll be bigger but bare in mind that they are only 1/35th scale and my painting can't stand up to too much enlargement.

Cheers Simon

Another quick update with bigger pictures for Nigel, so all I've really done here is to layer both he tunic and trousers, needs more layers though, especially the trousers I should have used a lighter green to map in the shade. Oh well live and learn I suppose. Once there is more of a balance in the mid tone to shade ratio I can start the blending in of highlights and deeper shade, or that's the theory anyway.

No time for painting now till the weekend, two days of duty granddad and I'll be too knackered in the evenings to do much of anything.

Cheers Simon

Looking good so far, he has a really weary expression, lots of character there.
But you seem to be fighting the colours. You are still painting like an oiler and seem far more at home with that, why did you switch mediums?

Rob, I got bored painting flats, I achieved my ambition with them and wanted to try something else. So I started painting fantasy and Sci fi mini's, soon realised that oils weren't the best media for 28/30 mm figures so switched to acrylic, picked up the gist of the paints pretty quick but found it hard to translate from that scale to 1/35th or 54mm and still trying. I'm going to keep plugging away at it though, I enjoy it even if my results aren't the best and really that's all I need from my hobby.

Cheers Simon

I know that feeling all too well, I am really struggling with 54mms. After 20 odd years of only painting wargame figures I am finding it hard to treat 54mms as display figure rather than gaming figure painting. So if I stop concentrating on blending and feathering I automatically fall back to painting them like a 28mm scale ogre or troll, huge contrasts, simple 3 stage layering, wash and black lining.
Frustrating.

Frustrating yes but we still do it as often as possible, my wife can't understand how I get any relaxation from it, particularly if it's going wrong and I'm swearing. Then she likes watching documentaries about serial killers and crime scene forensics, not comfortable watching and starting to wonder if I need to be worried!

My gaming figures were never for gaming, only ever to fill the cabinet, I could blend a lot easier in that size than I can now. Maybe I should make my figures in a smaller scale.

Have a good weekend, and keep painting.

Cheers Simon

That's better, I can see what's going on! And I like what I see, nice progress here.

Happy to oblige, must admit my eyes aren't what they used to be so definitely larger pictures from now on. Thanks for your support.

Some decent bench time to restore my sanity, or what's left of it. I admitted defeat on the fellas trousers, the shade I mapped in was far too strong and with red being fairly translucent I was never going to make it work. So they got a few coats of Vallejo Elfic Flesh and a new base coat of Vallejo Dark Vermilion, let that set and hopefully get them shaded a bit tomorrow.

Through the day I have added highlights to the tunic, painted his eppulets and cuffs, all the black strapping of the webbing on his front and started the metallic. All that and the housework my wife wanted me to do, so all in all a productive day and a well earned bottle of wine.

I was hoping to do some sculpting on my remaining 3 figures but they'll have to wait.

Hi Simon

Nice update on the figure ....I think the reds not that far off , it's impressive how this figure looks after the "proper modelling"

Seeing the figures in such large pics takes a brave man !

Look forward to seeing more

Have fun

Great work.

Malc

Cheers Malc, he's getting there.

Indeed almost on the home straight now, I have even prepared his base.

IMG_2534.JPG

OK I know it's just a piece of branch with painted flock on it, but I decided when I started making my own I was going to keep it simple and as I don't enter competitions I thought sod presentation.

Anyway the Legionnaire is almost completed, just need to shove him on the base attach the rifle and paint his hands.

Soon I can crack on with the 3 outstanding and not finished making figures.

I know I'm not the best at painting and what I am presenting here is much enlarged as the figure is only 1/35th. However I am trying to improve so before I close the cabinet door on this fella is there anything I can do to improve him, no I'm not gonna strip him back and start again,!

Cheers Simon

He looks good Simon, a lovely addition to the collection.

Cheers Rob, been thinking about what you said about me fighting the paint, I have a side project going that I hope I'm being more in tune with how the paint is best laid down, time will tell.

Cheers Simon
