Hi guys,

Can anyone out there shed any light onto how the rolled ends of leather straps were secured on knapsacks and other equipment, please? Im thinking particularly on French WW1 stuff! Were they tied in some way to stop them unravelling or maybe tucked into buckles? I cant seem to find a definitive answer,

Thanks in anticipation chaps,

Steve(y)

Hi Steve,

A good question this like you I can't see any ties as such my suggestion is that the strap was pushed back through the buckle and rolled in itself..if that makes any sense !

Hi Steve, I think Kev must be right.
I used to do that with my army '58 pattern webbing.
you could pull down on the vertical strap tabs at the front above the ammo pouches and tighten the kit.
Most of us would tighten it and then feed the tab back into the buckle and roll up the excess length within itself so it didn't flap and catch on stuff.

Thanks guys - This sort of confirms my thoughts! On the pics there is a buckle evident, so tucking it in makes sense. I think this will be a case of artistic interpretation!
Compliments of the season to you both too - doubtless we will catch up at the shows next year!(y)
