After my fun time with the Magnificent 7 + 1, I thought I'd use the same shading method using Sepia (oil).
Big mistake ...

At first it looked OK, until I looked at the photo.
It all looked was very rough and bitty, resulting in a few choice words.
Everything had previously worked well on the 'Eight', and I was a bit stumped.
Then it occurred to me that the 'Eight' had generally been painted with Humbrol enamels, with the oil sepia on top, very sparingly.
Flashheart's coat on the other hand had had a brownish oil covering over the enamel base, which had been sponged for the highlights.
This hadn't achieved the effect I'd been after, hence the sepia.
An attempt to try removing some of the sepia proved somewhat ineffective.
Two choices remained; hide everything by repainting the base colour or hide the sepia. I chose the latter.
The coat was covered completely with a slightly thinned Burnt Umber (still quite creamy), and brushed off using a couple of make-up brushes (kindly donated by SWMBO).
This was the result:-

Why didn't I do that in the first place? .... !!!!
I'm reasonably happy with the coat now, but the khaki jacket will have to be re-done.
The head is progressing slowly. The hair requires more work plus some more detailing on the face.

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi Andrew

That's interesting how things happened and good to see how you recovered well

Legs ......I will be having a word with you about this language .....

It could have been a stickiest situation since sticky the stick insect got stuck on a sticky bun.:ROFLMAO:
Glad things turned out good in the end, its looking great.

"Sticky the stick insect" ...........just wouldn't happen as I ate the stickiest sticky bun

Happy benchtime one and all

Thanks for looking and taking the time to comment Kevin.
The use of make-up brushes came, I think, from one of Ron's (kagemusha) posts.
I liked the idea, and asked Herself for assistance.
A number of spare freebie ones that She had were duly thrust into my sticky mit.
Previously, I'd used sponges, and this was my first true attempt using the brushes.
I like the effect, and will continue using them.

Look forward to seeing your Flashheart at Bugle Call.
Unless I do something stupid, mine will be on display there also.

Cheers,
Andrew

Nursie....love the beard, gives me something to hang onto....Rick Mayal's (saddly missing) potrayal of lord Flashheart (both the Elizabethan and the WWI versions) is IMHO one of the greatest moments in modern British comedy.Great start on this bust so far.I'll be watching closely to see how you are going to "capture" the "larger than life" personality of this hot air-headed lord.

Thank you for your encouraging comment Oda.
I probably won't achieve the effect that you are alluding to, but I'll do my best.

Cheers,
Andrew

I like what you have done with the leather coat Andrew. I've always found with oils that you take off more than you leave on.

Thank you for the comment Rob.
You're perfectly correct on the oils removal.
It's always a pity to see most of it disappear on the cloth, but if it achieves the effect you're after, what the heck!

Cheers,
Andrew

I've now managed to put paint on many of the outstanding items, and even made a start on applying oil paint to the belts.

IMG_3783r.jpg

Looking at the photo, I spotted some excess oil paint on the tunic, plus a couple of areas that I'd missed.
These have since been put right, and I've even applied a bronze printers ink and burnt umber mix to the collar badges.
That really brought out the ultra detail that Rob has achieved with his sculpting ... very well done Rob!

Cheers,
Andrew
