Greetings resin rumblers,

Its nice to see another subject rise from the workbench of a company from Korea that has proved to be in the past one that has quality subjects ..the name :

I have reviewed the previous busts from the company , these covered WW1 and WW2 here are the links

So as you might guess we have gone back in time with this release:

The sculpt is based on the illustration in the Osprey MAA (number 150) series "The Age of Charlemagne by David Nicolle PHD plate H2

Now I must admit when I saw this my first thought was "Norman" and this release could infact be painted up as a warrior from Hastings , you could easily add a nasal bar if you wish .

It would also cover the Ist Crusade as well if you wanted.

As this release has a kite shield as well then the options open up even more for the decoration on this.

Parts consist of the main torso , helmet , shield ( half) spear head, and shaft and a cloak brooch

Prep

Main Torso... Remove excess resin from lower base , minute casting line to sand off at back of base and underneath bust
Helmet ....Casting plug to take off and fit helmet
Shield...Casting plug to take off and fit to rear
Spear head and shaft...Remove excess resin and fit together
Brooch ....Remove casting block and fit ( locating cutout on torso

In the review piece the shaft was slightly bent ..easy to fix by a quick dip in hot water ( be careful!!!) or you could use a hairdryer as well to warm the resin up.
My suggestion is that you might like to replace it with a wooden cocktail stick ( you could sand it down if needed)

Lets look at the pieces

Main Torso

The knight is sculpted with his left arm over his chest onto his right shoulder , holding his hand into the cloak as well. He has mail on under the cloak ..very well done and around his head

DG 004.jpg

Particularly like the detail of the stitching on the leather edging around the face.

DG 011.jpg

Over the mail there is the strap that holds the helmet on with the ties on this sitting well below his chin

The top of the head is ready to fit the helmet to so no need to worry about the surface

Facial features are of the high standard I expect to see nice work on the eyes and nose , he is bearded with bits of hair coming out the sides .

DG 010.jpg
The cloak is wrapped round the shoulders with plain edging , allowing you to paint the design on if you want to , folds are naturally in place .

There is the shield strap pulling into the cloak itself , again sharply sculpted the end hanging slightly from the buckle which itself is sharp in shape.

The cloak is not textured but really smooth ..a high quality fabric perhaps.

The work on the sleeve again has good folds in place with the hand another area which looks good , nice nails and veins detail.

Helmet
This is conical in shape , no nasal bar , a good shape with the lower edging having a band with rivets all around , these are well worked .

Fit to the head is simple with a cutout underneath and accurate .

Shield

This is a "Kite" shaped version , not the full shape but the top half angled slightly in keeping to the flow of the bust itself .

No design is sculpted on it which is a good idea allowing complete freedom when painting it

Edges are banded with rivets , together with a central boss with the pad that sit on the inside having the rivets on the front .

Fits is again simple , a cutout on the back of the torso willingly takes the resin piece

Spear head and brooch

The spear head looks sharp and is nicely finished off I would suggest pinning this in place .

The brooch has a design on it again with fit being a simple matter

Final thoughts

A good addition to the bust series well sculpted and cast , like the chance to be able have different options by converting as well . The shield also offers much scope have a look at the artwork below for inspiration.

Recommended to all

Lets have some more pictures of the great painting by the sculptor himself ..no end of talent!!!
