Since this I was lucky enough to be contacted by Col Brown as he went on to be and he was so so helpful in my constant questions ...as you’ll see below

Details from Col Brown

Here’s the box ..a little battered needed to repair the Stetson , also did a few things ....

Added name tape above right pocket

Added the nurses badge on scarf

Redid the Stetson cords and strap

Tidied up the belt strap

Removed the sculpted details on arm badges ...I will repaint these freehand

I filled the eyes in ...since removed !

Hi folks

I have received this from a Vietnam 101st Airborne veteran , good friend from US .....

Ref shirt ...this is his actual shirt before leaving the theatre of ops

Great reference ...but so many variations as well


He also sent this ...

“......that this guy survived Lam Son is amazing. It was an incursion into Laos by the South Vietnamese supported by US units, mine included.
It was a total **** show as the South Vietnamese forces crumbled amid massive North Viet Namese forces.
We lost hundreds of helicopters lost and damaged. My unit got flown in to get the downed pilots and destroy the helos.
Some of the pilots we rescued and returned to base got right in another ship and flew again. Some were shot down twice in one day...all getting the ARVN troops out. Totally useless little turds.
We also had to make sure we got all the pilots-crews bodies out.
The pilots and crews were brave men.”

Nice bit of reference there, but like you say there was so much variation but one things for sure, nobody wanted to be seen in fresh new clean kit.

The passage he sent you is rather harrowing that things could be so badly managed, but from what I have read that was pretty normal for Vietnam.
