Hello Folks

Sculpted for me by Offo is this 1/9th resin bust depicting Mike Hoare former british army officer and mercenary who died earlier this year aged 100 years.

Born in Calcutta to Irish parents he joined the London Irish Rifles at the age of 20 later transferring to the 2nd reconnaissance Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps and fought against the Japanese in Burma during World war 2 taking part in the battle of Kohima and attaining the rank of Major. After the war he returned to his pre war job as a chartered accountant but found did not take to it and emigrated to South Africa where he worked as a guide taking tourists on hunting safaris and toured the African continent.

This controversial character came to public notice during the 1960's when he was employed as a mercenary by the Congolese Government to combat the communist backed Simba rebellion. He commanded the Congolese 5 Commando who alongside Belgian Paratroopers recaptured Stanleyville saving the lives of some 2000 european hostages being held by the Simba. The 'Mad Mike' title came from an East German radio broadcast which referred to him as 'That mad Bloodhound Hoare'.

In 1978 he was an advisor to the movie 'The Wild Geese' whose main character played by Richard Burton is said to have been based on Hoare.

In 1981 he was involved in an abortive attempted coup in the Seychelles after which he was imprisoned for 3 years. He eventually retired to France and later South Africa where he died in February this year.
