Hi Paul,
I don't know what rig you are using, but here's a few tips:
1. Use a lens with "MACRO" capabilities. Your shot is a little out of focus. If you do not have access to a macro, step back a little until the shot is in focus. Use the smallest aperture (f-stop) you can as this increases depth of field.
2. Natural light is more flattering, so go outside when you can. If you don't have access to natural light, put a tissue over your flash to soften it. You'll have to experiment with how many layers to use.
3. Pay attention to the background. I like photos on a dark velvet background as they make the figure "pop out" and absorb stray light.
There have been some articles on this subject from time to time in the figure mags. Can't specifically recall one right now to reference for you.
I found the big thing is practice, practice, practice and write down what works. Once you get your set-up correct you just repeat it again and again.
