I was looking forward to this Oniria release and although the Christmas holidays may delay my progress, I thought I'd get started.

The kit is based on the "Lt. Col. Thursday's last stand" scene from the 1948 movie, "Fort Apache" starring Henry Fonda as Lt. Col. Thursday and John Wayne as Capt. York. You can find the movie clip for this scene on You Tube if you are interested. Just search for "Fort apache movie Thursday"

WIP Progress:
I cleaned and assembled the five figures supplied with the kit.

I also decided I wanted a couple more figures to add to the group. Looking at Oniria's "Little Big Horn" kits, I selected two that fit the bill. I then Hollywood-ized them by removing the Carbine slings and belt knives, and making a couple of other minor changes, bringing them more in line with the kit supplied figures. One is prone, firing his carbine and the other is kneeling firing his.

I will use the Regimental flag supplied, as Oniria suggested, since it will be hanging motionless and is close enough in design to pass muster.

However, I'm going to print my own 37 star old glory and make it a bit smaller.

I'm also adding the "B" Company Guidon, that the Indians captured and delivered to Captain York. (Watch the You Tube clip!)

Finally, using some stones from my yard and Magic sculpt, I tried to create my "artistic" representation of the groundwork from the movie scene.

I apologize for the early photos as grey Magic Sculpt and Silver figures don't really photograph clearly.

I'll be back as soon as possible with some painted stuff.

Thanks for looking,
Ken

Can't wait to see this one painted. The addition of the last stand figures is a great idea. Never thought of it, but I am going to steal it when I order mine. Hope you don't mind. Love the base layout as well.

Looking forward to this one Ken, I wish I could do small figures, even with my optivisor I'm crap.
Love all the John Ford westerns too

Thanks Bill and Bob!
I enjoy the challenge of the smaller figures but age wise it's definitely getting to be an ever increasing challenge. :) But I love it!;)

Thanks Mike! The Little Bighorn figures are a little too historically correct for Hollywood, but even without my modifications, I think it would look good. Either way it makes a fun project even more interesting.

I agree. The Big Horn figures will work as is.

Hi Ken

Great to see you working on this set , as usual the groundwork looks good ...even unfinished !

Like the additional flag your adding , great piece of info on it as well

Look forward to seeing more on this

Happy benchtime

Finally, I managed to find some time to paint! Base and the first figure has been painted. :) Only 6 more to go...

I used the paper Flag supplied by Oniria which while not "absolutely correct" is fine, as Oniria indicated, since once it is placed in the hanging position most of the details are not visible anyway. Oniria does supply thin brass rod for the staffs but I opted for a slightly thicker more durable rod, while somewhat more out of scale.

I'm now working on the Old Glory standard bearer and hopefully will post again soon.

Thanks for looking,
Ken
