Absolutely stunning painting Mike. A masterclass effort. Hopefully we can get across the ditch before too long, and catch up for lunch and discuss our hobby - but not rugby. The AB’s are a couple of classes above the Wallabies. I won’t mention the cricket to our English mates.

Mike,
Regarding under coats. Currently I prime all models - metal, resin and the hard plastic (Historex), then undercoat with enamels to block in the base colour (ie. dark, mid or light red etc) before finishing in oils. I undercoat because of the translucency of oils.
What is your view?

PS. I can’t seem to master the blending of acrylics.

Wonderful to hear from you & trust all going well in ‘22 for you too.
Yep Aussie Rugby & English Cricket have much in common.
Neither is consistent, though can rely upon to deliver odd win.
Will be neat to catch up over this side of ditch one day.

Cannot imagine not using acrylics.
I did use oils on our Captain Pete’s Sam Browne.
Took me back a lifetime ago to getting my first one from Christies all ready for its first polishing. So long ago…
Though have also begun return to oils for most figures especially for leathers & fur.

He was bout 50/50 acrylics & oils.
I typically don’t prime resin, only metal, but do undercoat in bright tone for oils, to help get sheen to come thought.
Trust this helps a little.

Wow, that officer looks awesome. How long it takes to complete a project makes no mind, it's all about the fun I say, like a good Rugby match. Ya, some of us Yanks know football is for whimps, HA! Love the stippling process you've perfected Mike, most inmpressive. I'm still a bit timid taking that leap, but I'm gonna have to kuckle down some day, give er a go.

Your Reedee’s project is progressing well too.

Ref stippling, stibbling, dotting & dabbing - got specific section on this, trying to explain more in my book, including sketch, photos & notes. Hoping this will help encourage others to have a go.
At this stage planned for mid year’ish release.

I'm always trying to expand my capabilities, especially from the inspiration on this site, from sculptors to "paint sniffers". It's outragious the University level training one could obtain if they only paid attention, myself included, Woof!

Ref book - Will do Steve et al.
It was a real challenge trying to convey years of practice in words & pictures. Have leant on some info I shared here previously & refreshed this where it made some sense. Hoping it comes out OK. Fair to say it’s more a traditional approach than the flasher publications from the new generation of modellers.

Yes, a "real" tutorial book is more in line with my preference, who gives a rip about flash, make it count. This is a long time in coming, not something that anyone can do or ever thought of in the recent past. It's like, dime drop here, Mike Renaldi's Tank works. It's from a long process of grinding out the need for making resin come to life in a realistic manner. Dime drop, "Kaz". Yall are pioneers, so I say Ruck On! I'm in, ready to learn more, even at 59. Dang, what an ol fart I be, HA! I have a long way to go, so when you're ready. I have quite a few figs to paint before my days are done and I see a need for improvement.

Amazing how less dramatic lighting creates more subtle appearance mate.

Essentially a Step by Step Table with Important Steps & more detailed Key Points to explain Knack, colours & tips.
