Used to haunt the bookshop waitingfor the next one...then I just bought them when I saw them (without opening first to check contents).....then I bought selectively....then bought specials only.....then Euro only....then not even them. in MM, I know there will be only one figure-related article, the ads will be obsolete vs. this forum's breaking news....no show reports more than a page or two, no controversies in the editorials or mailbag.

But its not just becuase the mag's quality has gone done in inverse proportion to it's price. The net has made it obsolete. More specifically, PF has made it obsolete. Now I have a stack of MMs in my basement that are waist high that I would be lucky to get 10 cents on the dollar for. Loved it in it's time though.

Carl, you must have been bracing yourself for MM to get slated....

As most people have said, it's been a sad steady decline for this, I too for years have only bought the Euro ones, then gradually not even those. They got too predictable, and in the end failed, becasue they tried to mean something to everybody, and ended up meaning nothing to anybody.

Although the t'internet has eclipsed magazines to some degree, you still can't hold it your hand like a magazine. And you can't swot flies with it.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. It’s very sad that the mag has gone down the pan.
I appreciate the fact that the web has usurped many publications, but it was nice to have it in the paw nonetheless. I had a little look on the forum, and it’s full of nothing but praise for it. So to use a hackneyed phrase, they must be doing something right.:grumpy: Trying to turn it in to a one stop shop for all things modelling was in my eyes destined to fail, but it appears some like it. Perhaps they could start popping in a few railway layouts, and have a radio controlled section.
Planet rocks.
Thanks again, I'm off to find some flies to swat with a few copies.;)

I flick through it in the newsagents, I get as much info from the Tinterweb and havent bought it for years.

Agree with all said before
Their advertising prices were horrendous, back in the days when Military Modelling was THE magazine
Can't remember when I even looked at a mag (except NUTS)

Not anymore, I had all from 1971 until a few years back, thanks to dad handing them down. It was a great inspiration and I owe a lot to helping me in the hobby but the magazine does not come close to what it used to be and has lost direction completely, a real shame.

Spot on Colin......that's exactly my view

Used to have it on order but not any more, seems to be getting less figures all the time. Now as I am not getting out so much, my wife checks the contents, and if its any good it comes home. Most times she leaves it in the shop.
Sadly it can never keep up with Planet.

Only mag I still buy fairly religiously is "After the Battle." And I am not even a big WWII fan....but its so well done and has stayed true to itself over several decades now....and no ads. Some of their "Then & Now" books are absolutely brilliant as well - I have Battle of Briatin, Berlin, Battle of the Bulge. Not to pick on MM. I don't get Figurines or any other model mags now either - I would rather spend the money on other things.

Colin

Exactly right Colin, I too would rather spend the money on other things. None of the hobby magazines are cheap, most are just short of £6, with AFV Modeller being over £8.

Gra, I also have a lot of the older issues which are great for seeing just how far the hobby has developed over the last 40 years. Think how good you'd have to be to get your figure on a magazine cover today......then take a look back at 1971.........!

hi, i have been buying military modelling since 1972. and managed to buy the previous 15 years in the local newspaper. its an excellent mag , but i prefer the cover artwork, and articles format in the earlier issues, 1972 onwards. today i feel there are too many pages relating to one subject, and would like to see more variation in figures/diorama products for sale .i dont particularly like 4 or 5 pages relating to one tank or vehicle. but overall a good magazine that has lasted well. i am reading the power crisis issue just now, when the country shut down at 10 o/clock and the issue was printed in black and white. happy memories and 3 kids ha ha./badger

It was a sad day for me when I decided not to buy it anymore, I'd been buying it since 1984 and I brought my last copy in Feb. 2012,i didn't like what the magazine had become, mainly an AFV monthly, I still pick it up when I'm in WH Smith and have a quick flick through the pages but IMO its a heap of shit

So Brian, just why did you give it up? Got any real reason or was it just simply because its a heap of shit?

Don I loved that magazine, I learnt so much from it and the great artists that used to contribute to it, the articles were great, I still have all my issues from April 84 and still refer to them now, it was primarily turning into a AFV magazine, it used to infuriate me when you might get a couple of figure articles perhaps a couple of pages then you have AFV articles 9 to 10 pages long, last year I decided I was only going to buy the Euro Special then I found out they wasn't going to even do a Euro Special and that was the last straw for me, as I said earlier if you look inside it now its fucking crap and the articles are shit,it was a shame Ken jones who used to be the editor retired, don't know who the new editor is, not really interested.
