Greetings folks, I took the plunge and started work on my Officer, 79th Highlanders by Latorre Models. While there is a painting guide with the kit, it lacks color info on the sword. I've looked at pics in magazines and on the web of others that have painted this figure and they all finished the guard/hilt in silver. However, in my copy of 'The Thin Red Line', the color plates show these to be a gold or brass color. Keeping in mind that this section in the book is titled '1810 - 1815, 79th Regiment of Foot, ...etc... So, the book depicts a period prior to the Crimean War. Did the materials in the sword change? Is there an error? Also, for those of you that might know, are the turnbacks on the coat accurate in the book? I have seen other painters depict it differently. Thanks.

Joe

It is my understanding that Highland regiments were using the 1828 pattern broadsword with a steel hilt.

Thanks for the tip Richie (y)! I'm always looking to add to the Crimean War section of my library. Currently I have 10! I take it you've read this one and recommend it. Does it have pics, drawings, paintings, etc...?

That's OK Richie, fair enough. I'm still going to check it out. I have a buddy that deals in books of military history that lives about 150 miles away. He has thousands and thousands of titles and may even have this one.

I have this book, it is from Sterlings diary entries. there are no illustrations in my copy but there are some nice references to day to day life you won't find in other histories.
